Usually you need to set the boot order in bios - to look at optical drive before the boot drive. Then, when you boot with a bootable CDrom in the drive, it should work.

Are you running Win 10 or Win 7?

Press F10 during boot to enter the BIOS setup. There are both legacy and UEFI settings.

Running Windows 10 and the system refuses to see the optical drive in BIOS or for burning any data to CD or DVD. The drive will play a disk fine. I'll install another optical drive and see if that helps(maybe the one installed has a problem).

I had an issue where in order to get the keyboard and mouse working after booting from CD-ROM, I had to connect an original PS/2 mouse and a Microsoft PS/2 keyboard. The USB keyboard and USB track ball were not recognized when I booted onto the CD-ROM with either the Win10 system repair or Acronis disks. I did not have that problem on a different HP (a DX2300).

But to make your system start from a CD-ROM, you have to get into the BIOS.

I changed the "post delay" to add 10 seconds so I could more easily get into the BIOS setup before Windows boots. If you are having trouble entering BIOS setup, start pressing the <ESC> key as soon as you turn on the computer. A menu should pop up; select F10 to enter BIOS setup. You can also tweak the BIOS to extend the post process (and watch it) so you have time to press the <ESC> key. Once in the BIOS setup, there is an entry for "post delay."

Assuming you have pressed "F10" to enter the BIOS setup, right arrow to the "Storage" tab. When you select "Device Configuration," you should see your hard disks and your CD/DVD-ROM drive. Below "Device Configuration" are two more settings.

The second item is "Storage Options." That one has an entry for "Removable Media Boot" -- set that to "Enabled."

The third item below is "Boot Order." There are separate entries for "UEFI" and "Legacy." To enter the "drag" mode, you arrow down to the item, press <Enter> to select it, and then use the up-down arrow keys to move it around.

Arrange both "UEFI" and "Legacy" items so that "Atapi CD/DVD drive" is at the top.

Thanks for the detailed advice As it turns out, it was a small issue causing the big mystery. The seller shipped the tower with the optical drive connected to a row of SATA ports with 2 dark grey ports(where the DVD-RW was connected) and 4 white SATA ports. All the way down to the bottom edge of the motherboard, there is another row of SATA ports called SAS ports and the 4 hard drive bays were connected there. Once I connected the optical drive to that row of ports, everything works as expected. Now that that issue is solved, the Z820 is shaping up to be a damn fine PT rig

No, I tend to keep things fairly simple with VI's and also do some swapping out(like tracking with MiniGrand, then swap it for KeyScape and Commit the track).

I see. I'm trying to keep all VI's in realtime (no freezing, commiting or bouncing).

I rarely need more than 4-5 VI's(piano, organ, strings and pad) and piano encompasses grands, Rhodes and Wurly(mostly pop/country stuff here)
