Default Kick drum audio to midi

I'd like to generate a midi track from an audio kick drum track. Is there an easy way to do this? I could send the audio out into the real world, plug that into a drum trigger, and midi record the result, but it seems like there must be an easier way.

Can beat detective do something like this?

If I understand you correctly you could use a drum trigger such as ddrum kick trigger when your laying down the kick track and record both the midi and audio at the same time. If the track is already laid down and your unable to record with a trigger attached ....you could use a program like Drummagog. It's kind of pricy but its pretty cool in that it uses audio signals to trigger samples.
I hope that helps.

Good luck.

What I would really like to do is use a previously recorded kick drum track and generate midi data, rather than using soundreplacer or drumagog to replace the audio. I could then use the midi data to play the kick from a sampler, such as structure or strike (or my personal favorite, xpand). It would be great for snares, too. It seems like it would be a useful technique, and I am surprised there isn't some kind of simple way to do it.

I've only ever come across this in Digital Performer, not that it helps but the technology does exist.

Cheers

I often trigger my D5 with audio for new, ok better drum sounds. But as far as simple well thats another story. You have it right. You have to send out the audio to trigger your module and record the midi data. I generally just record the audio from the unit and be done with it. I might try what you are trying to do and just see what happens. Good Luck.

Melodyne or Drumagog can generate a MIDI note.

Thank you all for your input. It sounds like Drumagog or Melodyne would do the trick. I just wish there was a simpler (and cheaper) way.

Well, there is two cheaper ways to replace drums, but they are not as easy. You could:
  • buy some second hand drum-to-midi module and play the bassdrum through it
  • copy and paste your favorite drum sound using Tab to Transient

@Rail
Hey, thank you for finding that. I'll hold on until drumtracker comes out.
