Default PT HD on westmere 8 & 12 core Mac Pro question

Purchased two westmere Xeon E5620 Mac Pro the 2.4 8 core launched PT HD and works fine the 2.66 12 core Xeon X5650 gets as far as building DAE objects during launch and locks there so force quit only option. Tried new admin account even reinstalled OSX agin for good measure. OSX 10.6.4 and PT 8.1cs1 HD used anyone have a similar 12 core experience with success.

i had this happen on the 8 core westmere - i tried reinstalling to older versions of pt8 with no success - in the end i disconnected the omni interface i was using and replaced it with a 192 - pro tools booted up fine. then i shut down, removed the 192 and connected the omni again and its been fine since...

on 8.1cs1

i dunno if that helps but it worked for me

Thanks Sam I never thought of trying to boot with the 192 I'll give it a try
but I think by the time you get to building DAE objects it has already gotten past the hardware, but I'm ready to try anything at this point.
thanks
Bryon

Did you ever try to launch Pro Tools with the Omni attached with 8.0.4?

If so - that may be the problem. You should update to 8.1 before attempting to launch Pro Tools. We saw a similar case here with the same results - attaching a 192 and launching, then reconnecting the Omni seemed to fix it.

I tried it with 8.0.3 which does not see the hardware then went straight to 8.1
and 8.1cs1 after that to no avail I will try uninstalling tomorrow then going to 8.0.4 with a 192 and see if that get me a bit further and try 8.1 and the Omni after that, thanks for the suggestion

i didnt try to boot till i had 8.1cs1 installed and it didnt work. this was on a brand new 8 core westmere mac with a fresh install of p tools.

then i went back to 8.03 which wouldnt boot.

then 8.1 which wouldnt boot

then 8.1cs1 which wouldnt boot.

all of this was with the omni - freezing on building dae objects

once i got past this its been rock solid

so to answer your question digitech - no, i never tried to boot 8.04

2.66 12core, Magma with HD3PCI, 12GB.
PT's 8.1cs1 (1-192) Chassis Host in top slot (4x)
Cards in chassis from Right to Left.
Still authorizing many clean installs but initial running is OK.
Boots in 64 bit. I'll look to see if needed at 32 bit which is temporary with the 3 2 hold down at boot.
Video is reminiscent of scsi voodoo...
2-19" and 1-27", The 27 via DVI takes up to 3 min. to turn on.

Default PT HD on westmere 8 & 12 core Mac Pro problem solved

Well I owe Avid tech support once again my sanity as a reseller. I do 99% of the time PT turnkey systems and this one issue was solved by them by narrowing it down to the Omni HD not sure what the issue is with it but I just received a new shipment of some this morning and a different unit booted first time. I was set to try a 192 which was suggested by someone but not needed
now so looks like the 8 and 12 cores seem to be okay after all, and it is suggested to via terminal set up 32 bit boot as the default. So thanks for all the suggestions to all who answered.
cheers
Bryon

The Apple website has an article on how to set up 32-bit or 65-bit boot as the default (so you don’t have to hold down the keys each time).

Mac OS X v10.6: Starting up with the 32-bit or 64-bit kernel
