Default 002R low monitor level is very thin

Recently I have been getting a very different sound from my 002R than usual. I noticed recently that it's been very thin sounding. I started doing some testing to be sure it wasn't just me or my ears going. I ended up eventually plugging my speakers into the Main outs instead of the monitor outs. After lowing the sources volume to a reasonable level what I heard was much more of what I had been used to with the 002R. Then after connecting the speakers back up to the monitor outs I cranked the monitor level, and low and behold the sound that I've been used to was coming out of the monitor outputs. Whats gone wrong with my monitor level? I've always listened to it at about 9-10 o'clock, and now I have to turn the source material down and crank it past 12 to get a reasonable sound out of this thing!

I have no idea what could be causing this. Anyone have any ideas?

Corrosion on the plugs

A broken wire

Speakers damaged

Misadjusted amp level

Are the speakers self-powered or do you have an amp?

When ever things sound "thin", the first thing I try is a new balanced cable. Sounding thin is what often happens when a balanced line loses 1 of the 2 signal wires(for XLR, that's pin 2 or 3, and for TRS, its either the tip or the ring). Do both speakers sound the same when this happens? More details won't hurt here

They are powered speakers (BM5As). Both speakers sound the same. I tested things with an old 828 and it sounded better so I don't think it's the speakers or the cables. Since the main outputs sound ok maybe the monitor outs are corroded... I'll have to pick up some deoxit. Or are there any home remedies? :)

I'll try and dig up another pair of xlr to tar cables just to make sure that is not it.
