Default Pro Tools 8 lock up crash often

PT8 HD, MAC OSX 10.5.6, 3gig

I am trying to mix a few sessions and I am finding PT 8 not only to be really slow, but it often locks ups, giving me the fun little MAc colored circle wheel. Trying to force quit doesn't work. It always needs to be re-booted, re-launched until the next time it does it (which is often, several times a day). I have also encountered on one session playback to be jumpy. The time display show the numbers skipping all over the place. I imported the session plugin settings into another session and it seemed to work o.k. I have used the remove Pro Tools pref and database helper tool that is posted on this forum, still get the same results. Buggy to say the least.
Thanks and God Bless!
