Default BSOD on start up

Ok, so I've been having this problem ever since I got a new PC. I will post all the specs and a SANDRA report around 1:15p EST. I just wanted to give a heads-up to the intelligent beings here.

I had a HP laptop, running Win Vista x64. Pro Tools 8.x.x ran fine. No problems whatsoever. I wanted a desktop with more power so I bought an HP Elite w/ 6 Core AMD CPU, 10GB Ram, 1.5TB HDD (added an additional 2TB HDD), and Win 7 x64. Ever since I installed Pro Tools 8.x.x it has given me problems to consistently start up. I received installation instructions from a member of this forum, and I did get it to run. Still, on average, it crashes with BSOD on start-up 7 out of 10 times. Sometimes it will start up and crash mid session.

So, I felt maybe since PT8.x.x wasnt created to run on Win 7 PT10 would/should run fine. I bought PT10 this week, installed a SIIG PCIe Firewire card, went through the rigorous registration and set-up process with iLok and Avid, and installed it. Crashed with BSOD on initial start-up. The first time, it crashed while loading AIR plugins. Since I dont care for AIR plugins I deleted them. Then it crashed loading Eleven.

Like I mentioned earlier, I will post complete specs and a SANDRA report by about 1:15p EST. If any one has anything they can offer before that, please feel free to speak up. Thanks a lot.

**Also I did the Windows Optimizations

Default BSOD on start up

Really supposed to post a Sandra but anyway

Yeah that was happening to me as well - loading PT8 on XP - if I would move All the plugsins to another folder - It would launch but if input them back it wouldn't

I would recommend another uninstall - manually deleting the prefs and a registry cleaner - all with rebooting In between - it could also be another problem with other software in the computer

As a side note -I never got that PT8 on XP back up - ran out of time I will have to try it again later

In addition to the Sandra, what interface are you using? Vista x64 was never supported for any version of PT so that was nothing but luck. At the very least, you need 8.0.5 for Windows 7, and HOW you install can make a difference too. Can't offer any more until we see the Sandra and what interface you have

Is DEP (Data Execution Prevention) turned on? You can try disabling it and see if that helps.

Sorry about the late post.

@Bharath I have tried with DEP off first, then did the windows optimizations and turned DEP on. No difference.

@Albee1952 Win vista x64 wasnt supported but PT still ran in x32, it was never a problem. I had 8.0.5. running on this same machine, it was just very inconsistent. I know installation was key as it was you that helped me with installing PT8.0.5. I am using Mbox Pro Firewire.

I've just installed SiSandra, the next post will contain the report.

OK so I uninstalled PT10, did a registry clean, updated the BIOS, all while rebooting. Then I re-installed PT10 without the AVID Effects add-on. After a reboot, it started up fine.

I am now going to install the AVID Effects and see how this plays out.

4 details to consider(thanks for the Sandra):

1-you have 1 odd stick of RAM. I would remove it(the 2GB stick). Then, make sure the matched pair are in the same colored slots. That motherboard supports dual-channel RAM, but you must use matched and even numbers of sticks(the 2GB stick is killing dual-channel operation anyway)

2-wifi and Bluetooth should be disabled when running Pro Tools(at least until things work smoothly, THEN try leaving them on to see if they cause problems).

3-BSOD can often be caused by bad drivers(especially outdated PACE Interlok drivers). Open Device Manage(with an internet connection) and update drivers(especially if you see any yellow exclamation marks).

4-you need a proper recording drive. The D: partition is part of the system drive and is NOT good, and the Samsung is a 5400 rpm drive(also NOT good). I would get a 1TB WD Caviar Black for recording(and format it as NTFS and BASIC).

Everything is all good now. I assume it was the registry clean since I've never cleaned the registry.

I ran the setup with compatibilty for windows 7, and ran the program with the same setup.

I've just installed Waves, so now im going to restart and see if that works fine.

That's good news, but you still need to pay attention to #1 and #4. Even if things seem fine now, the RAM setup might give you a real performance boost(you DO want more performance, don't you?), and the proper recording drive will NOT cause you problems down the road(using a non-approved drive WILL, eventually).
