Google for "cpusetter"

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
Guys be very careful of going around in circles.
Disabling hyper-threading on a Mac was an important tool to use at times, but mostly before Pro Tools 2019.x with its much improved threading support. And the need to do this varied greatly with plugin usage and depth of plugin and bus chaining. So let’s start by being clear what version of Pro Tools you are all talking about. |

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
I am on the latest version of everything and I get clearly less errors by disabling hyper threading. I know it’s supposed to work better now, and perhaps it does for some but on my system, HT stays off.

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
And the next question is what plugins... this is likely very plugin dependent... but the good point here from this is *try* disabling hyperthreading if you are seeing CPU errors. (And please share as many details as possible if it helps you).
For myself, 2019.5 ended my playing with disabling hyperthreading, I use very few non Avid (complete plugin bundle) plugins, mostly extra stuff is from Positive Grid and Toontrack drum VIs. |

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
I too am running the latest versions of everything on a Mac Pro Mid 2012 12 core. I just randomly grabbed DSP plugins and through them on. So, my test was not real world or scientific. My screenshot could better explain which plugins than I could. I like being able to turn hyperthreading on and off with cpusetter so easily, to see which is better for the situation I’m in.

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
"CPU setter" hyper threading off didnt help. Actually made it less stable. Latest pt with hdx. 12 core cheese grater. Better for me normal setting.

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
Good morning! I would like to share my findings regarding putting an older AHCI blade in the Crest card. It makes the drive faster. The write speed almost doubled. Probably because the old adapter card was not as fast and/or seated in a 4x Pci slot. The top one. The crest card is in the lowest available 16x slot. So, the pictures show the same drive, a SAMSUNG MZHPV512HDGL in a regular simple PCI host card (lower values) and then in the Crest card slot 2. Slot one on the Crest card holds a Samsung SSD 970 PRO 1TB and that is much faster. The 970 Pro gets to 2600 write and 2800 read on a good day.

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
Thanks for sharing your results.
The difference in speed you are seeing is the actual magic of this adapter card. The PCIe switch on the card is doing PCIe 2 to PCIe 3 link aggregation, turning pairs of slower PCIe 2 lanes in the Mac Pro into a PCIe 3 lane, and doing that across 8 down to 4 lanes. This sort of lane aggregation happens down at the PCIe hardware level so is possible to just work with different devices, with maybe some exceptions, but in this case does not care about AHCI vs NVMe... they are higher level disk protocols running over PCIe. Most M.2 PCIe slot adapter cards have no switch at all, they are dumb a rock and just directly wire the slot lanes to the M.2 connectors. Which is why they can cost ~$20 each. And to make it clear to folks the older model number AHCI drive being discussed is the Samsung SM951. With PCIe 4 SSDs starting to appear, we will likely end up doing similar in future with the PCIe 3 slots in the new Mac Pro cheese graters.. Last edited by Darryl Ramm; 08-26-2019 at 02:32 PM. |

Re: NVMe upgrade for Mac Pro 4.1/5.1 Mojave
I am happy to report my upgrade is now complete (including Mojave 10.14.6)and PTHD 2019.6
And all is going great. The Mojave install with my no boot screen Graphics card was more straightforward than I had anticipated Also my power on, to desktop is now about 40 seconds I have not done any recording but have loded played and done some mixing on about 10 previous sessions without any hitch (Very stable)
