Default Monitors upright or on their sides??

Does it make any difference? I'm having some new studio furniture made and thinking about some rack unit shelves made on the work station desk if I have 4 units each side I can get more outboard gear in but my HS8's will need to be on their side. At the moment they are up right on stands but I want to get rid of the stands to be honest

I think mine bring instructions for both in the manual. Did you check?

here you go .. https://usa.yamaha.com/files/downloa...i_en_om_b0.pdf

and every picture, including those for mounting on wall or ceiling mounts shows the monitors in an Upright Configuration .. and there is one statement about having the Tweeters at Ear Height ..

that said, you could try them in Landscape Config (haha, sorry for the smart phone reference) or on their side and see how they reflect off surfaces compared to upright ..

cheers john

I think the statement about having the tweeters at ear height makes sense, since the high frequencies are the most directional. That said, if you could build some stands that accomplish that while having the speakers horizontal, it might be worth a try. You will only know if you do some tests.

Even though I have my speakers upright, I built some small 6" stands so the tweeters are at ear height (using Alesis Monitor Two three way's).

It depends on the monitor design. There are some out there that are specified to only work as designed in the upright position. Yet others have a specific right and left position. Really have to dig into the documentation that comes with the monitors.

Or just get a pair of Horrortones and there isn't any upright or on the side

I've seen Yammies (HS Series) in that configuration before, works fine. The tweeter and the woofer are on the same center line and the wave guide of the tweeter is symmetrical (circular). Rear ported, should be okay.

Keep the tweeters at ear level and pointed at a spot about 6" behind your head.

I can't do it with my Neumann's; front ports and a-symmetrical (oval) wave-guides on the tweeter.

Interesting! I just found a pdf file online for my Alesis Monitor Twos, and it turns out I have had them set up wrong for years. The tweeter sits between the woofer and the mid-range, about 2/3 the way up from the bottom. Depending on which speaker you are looking at, the tweeter is either on the far left or far right side of the speaker, about 3 inches from the side. I had my speakers positioned so that the tweeters on each speaker were on the "outside" of each speaker. They should be on the "inside" of each speaker when facing the speakers, in other words, the tweeters should be closer to each other rather than farther apart. Alesis could have made set up easier by labeling the speakers left and right, but instead they labeled them A and B.

I doubt whether my poor mixing skills will be impacted by swapping the speaker positions, but at least now I have them positioned correctly.

That's the thing the desk that is being made will either allow upright or on the side but I need to decide which one before it's made
