Default Experiments in Ram usage of Protools - interesting results!

I have made some interesting observations in my endless quest for more memory in Protools.
just for the record this is PT 7.4 cs3 HD3 on a HPXW8400 with 3 gigs of ram running win xp pro .

Open task managerand sort by Mem usage and watch what happens as PT is launched .On my system with NO session loaded ,
Protools.exe uses 711 MEGS of ram ( 711, 172 to be precise)
which is NOT given back after load !.ie it still is being used in task manager.

Now minimise Protools.. surprise surprise,
ram use drops to 10 MEGS! (10,888) and only moves to 12 MEGS when maximised again...
This is VERY odd indeed... why did protools not give that ram back before it was minimised?

Continuing , and opening a session (24 tracks or so) mem usage is now
115 Megs ..which if the session is playing , rises the further into the track you get. 170 megs by the end of a 4 minute song.
Now the interesting bit. - minimise Protools while the track is playing Ram use drops to
30 Megs , but the track is playing perfectly!
So what is PT using this extra >100 megs of ram for when maximised? - surely not for drawing the tracks?
The biggie for me is, that by minimising and maximising again, we can appear to recover huge amounts of ram from protools..why?
It almost sounds like some kind of memory leak is going on .

I would be interested to hear from people more knowlegeable than me on this , but it doesnt feel right to me !

cheers

Interesting! I can tell you, from my experience, that Memory Leaks do not go away with simple minimization of the application. This could simply be what PT has "requested" or is "reporting" to the OS... maybe? Is Task Manager truly real time? I always wondered that.

Yea

the more I see it, the more I think Task manager is lying LOLOL
Im going to try the same using Everest monitoring, and see what that says.
Not much point in having a task manager if its not actually telling the truth LOL

cheers

This is a real problem. I think the reason more people aren't experiencing this is because I only see the memory leak on bigger projects. TV programs over an hour. That's probably about 2% of the windows users.
Best,
Brandon

it is possible that is when maximized the GUI requires a significant amount of ram though isn't it? usage goes down significantly when you eliminate track color and waveform drawings. I almost always do this when working with my PC laptop

Yes, this happens to me too. The bigger the session the worse it is. Then, it will use all available memory and crash. I have a feeling this will not be fixed in Pro Tools, but maybe running PT on a 64 bit OS could help.
