Default Mbox 3 Pro; errors saying firewire too slow

Still on a PTHD 10 system, so I picked up an Mbox 3 Pro so I could start playing around with PT 12. Drivers installed fine, PT software recognizes it. Since its still FW400, using adapter to hook into FW800 on Mac Pro. But even with the largest buffer size, 1024, getting 'firewire too slow' error messages. I've never used a firewire interface before, so I have no idea what or how to troubleshoot. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
