Default drawing automations

Hello,

Could some please tell me how use the pencil tool in protools. I selected the pencil but can not get it to draw with in the regions. Is there a simple reason why this is not working.

Hi, (whomever. don't know your name!)

I'm assuming that you want to draw in volume or mute automation, for a start anyway? You need to make sure the edit window for the track is displaying 'Volume' or 'Mute' and not 'Waveform'. Once you switch to volume, for instance, you will see a solid black line. Click on it with the pencil and PTLE will create a small white square as the edit point. Now if you switch to the hand, you can drag that up or down as necessary.

I'll bet other have more sophistacated ways of doing it, but that's how I do it.

Cheers,
Mark

My favorite way is strictly with the grabber tool. You can make points, move them, and remove them with it (alt click, I think). To start a fade automation, I make the first points (making an even fade with no curve), then just keep adding points and/or moving them until I get the timing as smooth as I want.

My favorite reason for using the grabber tool and going point by point is there's never millions of points (like with the pencil) so it's easy to make adjustments and you won't have to worry about using the thin automation data feature.

Experiment and find what you're most comfortable with.
