Default External Hard Drives

Hey guys and gals,

Just curious as to what external hard drives everyone is using these days. I've used LaCie's for years now, and never had a problem. However, I recently purchased one of their new thunderbolt hard drives, and it only had one thunderbolt port on the back . What's the point of daisy-chaining thunderbolt devices if there is only one port.

Anyway - it got me thinking of other options. I read somewhere about these, which are interesting http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/METB7DH4.0T/. My main concern is that they are listed as sustaining 400 mb/s. That seems really low to me.

Any thoughts? Anyone using OWC successfully? Any other options?

BTW - PTW 10.3.9 / late 2012 iMac / Quad 3.1 /16GB ram / OS 10.8.5

Thanks!

were are you seeing that spec?
what I found on the Spec page:
Quote:
Max Data Transfer Rate

  • Thunderbolt – Up to 10Gb/sec
  • USB 3.0 – Up to 500MB/sec
  • USB 2.0 – Up to 60MB/sec
might be a miss on updating from the FW400

OWC are my recommendation as the best value(better quality than Lacie, lower price than Glyph)

Thank you everyone for your replies!! I'll be purchasing the OWC drive today. I really just needed to hear from some users who could confirm that the drives are up to spec!

[QUOTE=Craig F;2184296]were are you seeing that spec?

Craig, I'm pulling this directly from the main info page of the link:

"High-Performance + Flexible
A blazing fast Thunderbolt chipset unleashes the full potential of this rugged external drive's dual 3.5" hard drives with sustained data rates of nearly 400MB/s plus the flexibility of hardware RAID 0, 1, and non-RAID modes to best suit your demanding applications and workflow."

I'm guessing that the key words here are "sustained data rates".

Thanks again for everyone's help!

-Mike

+1 for OWC.

On-the-go PRO 7200 rpm, 1TB firewire 800 and USB 3.0, bus powered.

Have never had a problem with them. Have had problems with other manufacturers.

+1000 for OWC. Been using them for many years without a single problem ever. Had problems with Lacie's, Glyph's and quite a few other's.

I am using:

For sample libraries: OWC Elite Pro.

For audio projects: WD BUFFALO DriveStation USB 3.0

Both work very well!
