brand new HD I/O works fine but smells of burning components
Hi all,
So I have a question for folks who currently own and use the Avid 16x16 HD I/O. I just got one to replace one of my 192 I/Os. I opened the double taped (apparently already once opened) box and found the HD I/O wrapped in a loose untaped bag. Before plugging it in it smelled like hot/burning components. I hooked it up and used it for several hours and it appears to work and sound fine but the smell has now permeated the control room. I have had some other electronic devices have this smell out of the box but never like this. What would you do? Run it a few days and see if the smell goes away or try to talk the dealer into taking to back and giving me a new one? Maybe they all smell this way out of the box? It runs no hotter than my 192. Whaddaya think?

Send it back. My HD I/O 16x16 did not have any odor when new (or now for that matter). Burning/hot electrical anything is never good.

Relax, it might be just some dust in the power supply...

Dust in a brand new unit? Still smells after day 3. Back it goes!

Yep. IF there's dust in the factory, there'll be dust in the box.
