Default MAJOR problems with dig001, pro tools 6.1.1 on Win XP HELP!

Hey guys, I just installed pro tools 6.1.1 and a digi001 interface on my PC (2 hard drives, AMD 3200+, asus premium sli mobo, 500w PSU, 256mb GeForce 6800 xtreme, dual dvd burners, 2gb RAM, AUDIGY 2ZS Platinum SOund card)

After installing pro tools, the second i clicked on the shortcut to the program, my PC shut down and when I started, I had the error message: "BOOTMGR MISSING". I've seen this before and realized this may be because of my Windows Vista and XP dual booting. So I unplugged the hard drive with vista on it and rebooted. Windows loaded fine but when I clicked on the protools, again it shut down instantly and the next error message at startup was worse...it was something about inserting a system disk ...basically it seemed as though no hard drives were dected. So I plugged the old HD back in and SOMEHOW my PC loaded completely normally (with the win vista and XP options, etc like it did before the pro tools install). So now I'm afraid of clicking on pro tools and I don't know how to get it to work. (I'm running this on XP by the way).

My digi001 ligths up and seems to work but I tried to plug in a condenser mic today with phantom power on and I couldn't record on anything...audacity, etc (although I guess it won't work w/o pro tools). I also don't hear anything except just dead signal noise when I plug in headphones into the digi001.

Please help! I really have no idea what to do!

You need to:
  1. Update to 6.4
  2. install the 6.4cs6 update
  3. install the 6.4cs9 update
  4. install the latest PACE drivers

I would also recommend removing the Audigy.

This is a problem with earlier versions of Protools and Windows XP SP2. When SP2 was released these problems came up. Spkguitar's steps above will solve this problem.

Can I update to 6.4 for free? Also, I have my monitors running through my audigy right now in a 5.1 surround setup--if I go through the digi001 (which essentially I'd love to because then I can use TRS balanced cables instead of RCA to mini like I do with the audigy), I wouldnt' get true surround, I'd just get a stereo signal going to all my speakers right? The monitors (if you need to know) are KRK RP5s and a 10s sub.

Main thing right now though is fixing the damn Pro Tools--I really need to make a few quick recording asap. Thanks guys!

PS--any way to use the digi001 without protools right now just to test out and see if I can get a decent recording with this condenser mic i just bought? Thanks!

The Protools LE software and the associated hardware (Digi001 in your case) does not support 5.1 surround. The upgrade to 6.4 is either free or a small fee (maybe $50.00). You can check the digistore for it. The Digi001 does work with other software that support the ASIO standard (still not 5.1 surround however) You really just need to update your version to Protools 6.4cs9 and download the free pace drivers from paceap.com. If you need 5.1 surround, you need to go with another software/hardware solution or ante up to Protools HD software and hardware ($$$)

Doesn't anybody look for things themselves anymore? Here, I'll hold your hand...(you will need to log into your profile or create one on the Digidesign site to download some of the following)
  1. 6.4 is free for 6.1.1 owners
  2. 6.4cs6 is free
  3. 6.4cs9 is free
  4. You're going to want the documentation (or maybe from the content of this thread... NOT!)
  5. PACE interlok drivers are free

To use the 001 at all, you are going to need to monitor out of the 001, which as OD mentioned, does not support 5.1. The only way to use the 001 to record in other applications is if the application in question supports the ASIO driver and you have the ASIO driver installed. (Reading the documentation might really put you ahead in all of this, you know.)

As far as I am aware, Audacity doesn't have ASIO capabilities, so no, you will not be able to use the 001 to record to it.

I already answered that question above:

Any audio application that supports ASIO can be used to record through the 001 as long as you have the ASIO driver installed. That would include, but is not limited to; Cubase, Nuendo, Sonar, Reaper, SoundForge, ACID, Ableton Live, Adobe Audition (the list goes on and on and on....)
