Default Avid SC48 and Shrek roar.

Avid SC48 and Shrek roar.

I am doing Shrek the musical soon and the director said there is a roar that Shrek does that could be a sound effect playback or I could use an effect on the actor to enhance his roar.

The console I will be using is an Avid SC48, it has the plug-ins that come with version 3. I would like to see if I could set up a way to enhance the actors roar to make it really big. I was thinking of using a big reverb and maybe even pitch shifting it down a bit. Have any of you ever done this and do you know the settings and plug-ins I would need to use to make this work?

I just finished a month long run mixing shrek. I used a sound fx clip over top of the actors live roar.

What did you use for the SFX clip? I haven't found anything good yet.

I took it from the Broadway DVD. The second roar in the show is isolated enough to use.

Thank you. I am looking to see if the director has the DVD.

Well I tried the sound effects roars and we didn’t like them. The director said the actor couldn’t do a good roar. I had the actor do a roar but not trying to push it (like the director was trying to get out of him) and mess up his voice. And I did what I originally thought might work. I assigned his mic to an additional channel and on that channel I inserted a pitch shift (down a bit) and a reverb and I bring it up when needed with a scene recall. And it works great. I just need to be sure to not bring it up at the wrong time or he sounds like some sort of demon.
