Volume Automation
I clicked on volume on a track to reveal the automation envelope line. I clicked on it with the grabber to insert endpoints, but my endpoints go to the beginning of the measure rather than where I put them. How can I change that?

Yes, I was in Grid mode. Thanks. I just found out about the different modes.

Welcome to the learning curve. There's a lot to learn, but the rewards are great. BTW, youtube.com can be a huge help....
