For the record, I am successfully running PTF with the following system:

Abit VT6X4 (VIA VT82C694X and VT82C686A)
PII 350
128MB RAM
9GB IBM Deskstar HD (10,000rpm)
SB Live! Value sound card

Must be lucky as I am running with both VIA and a SB Live card. I have had one lockup in three days. The demo runs flawlessly and I have not yet utilized all 8 tracks for my personal sessions.

The same thing happens to me right after a Pro Tools session. Suddenly, without warning of any kind while I am browsing or something my computer will just restart! Here are my specs:

1 GHz PIII
128 MB RDRAM
64MB DDR nVidia GForceGTS 2
40GB 7200RPM HDD
SB Live!

We are trying to get in touch with PT FREE users that are seeing reboot problems (there have been about 5 independent reports of this issue, I believe).

We are also having this problem at Home Baked Music. We downaloaded ProTools Free
onto one of our machines (which uses SoundBlaster Live) and it locks up completely after launching ProTools. The actual lock up occurs in different parts of the program (right at the start, in a pull down menu, or during a playback), which does indicate an asynchronous source to the problem.

We are at [email protected]

Hi !

I have exactly the same problem. ProTools launches flawlessly but when I try to open an existing project or start a new one my computer reboots or I get a blue screen and then it reboots. A really cool program, would be nice if I could use it :-(
My configuration:
Celeron 400
AL440LX
256 MB Ram
2x 8.4 GB Samsung HD
Elsa Erazor II (RivaTNT)
Sound: Yamaha Waveforce 192XG

SB Live seems to be a common factor. Could this have something to do with the Live card's fixed sampling rate (48k I think).

If you're getting the splash, try editing your set-ups BEFORE opening/starting a session. Make sure your sample rate matches the SBLive default (think 48 but not sure).

Worth a shot anyway. Incedentally, I'm running a PII400 with an SBLive value and no apparent problems...

Nope, Not limited to SoundBlaster Live!

I have the same problem using
Lynx Studio - LynxOne. Audio card.
Athlon 650

everything seems to work fine until I hit "Record&Play" then my computer spontaneously reboots.
