Default 7.3 performance

tried 7.3.1cs2 the first time today! i setup a new sata-hd, installed os 10.4.8 and then 7.3.1 and the uptodate cs version! i´am using a g5 dual2gig (third gen.) with 3,5gig ram. this machine is dedicated to protools only. plugs: some sonys, some mcdsps, drumagog and the digi stuff! nothing special, everything supported!
the first thing i experienced was that protools doesn´t react that fast. i created a session with 24 tracks and inserted a signal generator to all of these, just to test my plugs and the I/O´s. get a spinnball fist time when i hit start. when i insert the drumagog plug, 7.3.1. also gave me a long spinnball. quiting pt took about 10 sec. (!!) (again with a rainbow). i´am successfully using 7.1.cs10 beside and it´s stable and fast like hell. if never experienced that behaviour in any pt version before. not worked with a real session yet cause i´am a little scared so far! this software works much slower as the mentioned 7.1. on the same machine! is it the os or maybe the p.t. version? hardware too old, optimized for the new macpros? am i missing something else? i really really setuped the system very carefully and did all the troubleshooting stuff. thanx for any comment on this, alex

Just a wild stab in the dark here, but the last time i set up a g5 from scratch (not for protools, but Nuendo) , it took a little time to 'settle', as i believe that spotlight was working in the background, indexing stuff...i left it overnight, & all was fine...

USD-

I had almost the exact same experience my first go-around with 7.3.1. I upgraded my machine (dual G5) from an install of the last CS version of 7.2, and had a pretty terrible time with it.

Long story short, do a "clean" uninstall of Pro Tools, reboot the system, and reinstall 7.3.

Following those steps, I ceased having issues with my setup (aside from PT occasionally crashing after launch, but that's a different thread...)

I did a clean install of 7.3.1 and had good results. I've found I'm a lot happier with my Pro Tools computer since I kept it off the internet though.

When you do an uninstall (use the Uninstall Pro Tools app in /Applications/Digidesign/Pro Tools/Pro Tools Utilities/) there will be two options: a Safe Uninstall, and a Clean Uninstall.

Choose Clean Uninstall, reboot, and reinstall Pro Tools.

I'm running 7.3.1cs1. I do not bother updating each time some fix comes out. Have a look at the changes before deciding if you actually need the update. It's always tempting to have the very latest software, but getting on with some work beats that for me.

I keep my Pro Tools computer disconnected from the internet. I have a G4 with Cubase next to it for midi and the internet.

Dual 2.0 G5 PCIe with 2.5 GB SDRAM. I think these G5s are the sweet spot for Pro Tools. I know there are some issues with the 2.3 and 2.5. I think if you carefully follow the settings and instructions from digi when you install things normally go well. I also keep anything off the machine in the way of other software apart from quickeys and Toast. That's why it's good to have another computer to take all the junk!
