Yes, that's the big question, sorry but don't know.

Jesper
we should create a session with one audio file SDII in PT10 and then use both programs to see if PT can relink to the converted Wav files .. i am up for it !!

maybe i can do this later today or tomorrow ..

cheers john

Would using Import Session Data to a blank session allow you to change the file type from SDII to Wave?

Force to Target Session Format .. so, yes

i think you are saying to convert the session to Wav in PT10 then bring it up to whatever version you are using ..

good idea ..

Yes. Sorry I'm on PC so never had to deal with SDII files.

Of course there will be issues with plug-ins that have changed or aren't available going from older sessions to PT10/12.

So you can open sessions with SDII files from Pro Tools 12 just by importing session data??? That seems way easier than what I've been doing. Why is this not more commonly known??? Sheesh... I'm going to try that very soon.

It's true that Avid made the statement that SDII would not be supported in Pro Tools moving past PT10, however ...

I can say with absolute certainty that some SDII based projects from my past (which I had never expected to work on again) have come back to life. While today I have an external FW drive to boot my MacPro 5,1 into macOS 10.8 and PT 10 ... that will not always be the case. PT12 can read old PT session files, the missing ingredient is a batch conversion of the SDII -> WAV - not something that is a great challenge.

A batch processor to convert a session's worth of audio files is not readily searchable nor available (nor supportable?). Furthermore - the creator of the SDII file type is Digidesign - now Avid.

I'd suggest that Avid make available one of the two following solutions:
  1. Allow ingestion, conversion and export of SDII files as part of Pro Tools again. Conversion being the only supported function of this exercise - no ability to use, record or mix with SDII files - simply convert->export
  2. Provide an Avid sourced and maintained conversion utility which performs batch SDII->WAV conversion.

I'd suggest the second solution keeps the codebase cleaner and avoids confusion as to what PT can and will do with SDII format files, and utility software which converts between formats is relatively simple.

As sure as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame creates a resurgence of interest in established artists back catalog, there will be a continued call for conversion of SDII files. Avid is the creator/instigator of the SDII file type and as PT is the industry standard - a solution is owed us.

I dug out an old HD with an older system and PT10.
It was easy to convert with it- just open and save.

But I still dont' know whey PT12 can't do the same thing. Force the conversion sure, but since it WILL convert it, why not make it seamless?
If PT12 wouldn't recognize and covert SDII files- I could understand it. But it does, so why remove the easy conversion process?

hi steve, no, not in PT12 .. but using PT10 you could create a WAV version of the session that you could then import into PT12 .. the old Valley Two Step from Denim and Diamonds !!!
