MBOX Heaphones
I see the MBOX headphone socket has a spec of 32 ohms impedance, and freq response of 20Hz - 20KHz. Does this mean that any headphones used should meet this spec also to get the best sound reproduction ?
Can anyone recommend a suitable pair ? £50 / $50 ? Thanks Alan. |

Nope. Ideally the output would be zero ohms impedance and able to drive anything. Your choice of headphone is first what care you doing with it (what type of music, for use only for mixibg? or tracking (tracking what?) or both), and does it need to be closed back or in-ear or do you prefer an open back headphone?
Tough to find something great at this price point. |

Re: MBOX Heaphones
I would be using them for listening to my incoming amp, mixed with a track playing in pro tools.
I tried some 24ohm headphones and they were very quiet compared to a set of 32ohm headphones. What's the optimum impedance for headphones on an MBOX ? |

Re: MBOX Heaphones
We are dealing with some stuff that is tough to quantify. Just because one set of phones has a different impedance than another, does not mean either set will be louder, but certainly a 600 ohm set will be way softer than a 32 ohm set. Its not only the impedance, it is also the sensitivity(how loud it gets with 1 milliwatt of power applied). I have a set of Shure phones that are 44 ohms, and they are softer than my Sony's at 32 ohms. Is it the impedance, or is it the sensitivity? I honestly don't know(and actually I don't really care). If I need LOUD, I compare all the phones in my price range, and look at the specs. As an example, look at these phones:
http://www.audio-technica.com/cms/he...dab/index.html According to the specs, they will play at 103db with 1 milliwatt, while these: http://store.sony.com/professional-s...pfm%3Dcategory will play at 108db(5 db louder, given the same input)

For the second or third time, stop fixating on impedance. I suspect it does not mean what you think it does. I'm still not following what you are doing with the headphones. What is an "incoming amp". If say you are tracking guitar and have the guitar amp that is audible to you you want closed back headphones or in-ears so you have a chance of heading the miked amp/cab signal while tracking. If you are just mixing you might want open backed headphones. If tracking vocals you normally want closed back headphones so there is not bleed from the headphones to the vocalist's mike. My favorite open back headphones are Sennheiser HD600/HD650, harder to drive and out of your budget. Some lower-end Sennheiser open backs are nice and better value. A closed back option is http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-...zer+headphones But at least on paper the Sony's Dave mentioned should sound louder. If you are in a noisy environment then in-ear phones are a good option. If you clearly describe what you are doing and with what type of instruments and music you are working with you will have more chance of folks making useful recommendations. Re: MBOX Heaphones
FWIW, the Sony's I have are the MDR-V600. These USED to be a bargain(around $75 on eBay, brand new) but something has happened with the pricing on those as they are now way more(and I don't know why). Best thing to do is take your smart phone or iPod to the local music store and try all the phones in your price range, and buy the loudest set(but truthfully, $50 will not buy anything great). As said, if you will track vocals or acoustic guitar, you want closed-back(or IEM buds) so there is less bleed going back into the mic.

Re: MBOX Heaphones
More than your budget, but check out etymotic's hf5. They're about $100. And if you don't like the tips they come with look at comply. I have them and their top of the line er4's ($300). And while the er4's are a bit better, they're no where near 3x better.
