Default RTAS Composition Tool?

Hi, I'm looking for a program or a plugin that will let me compose in Midi by entering notes on a scale.

Here's the story: I have a music training program called Practica Musica, I'm just starting to get into it, but the most interesting thing I've found is a part of the program that displays a scale, and allows you to set the key, so as you enter notes, they're all in place, and everything's cool. For a musical impbecile like me, this is a really easy way to get an idea down. The only problem, besides a somewhat clunky interface, is that it won't allow you to save those compositions out as midi files. So what I'm looking for is a composition program or plugin that allows me to enter notes on a scale, save midi files or work it directly in PT. Gosh, it just occured to me that Pro Tools might already have this ability... I've never seen it. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks!
-Olaf

Wow, nothing? I guess I'm the only idiot who can't keep notes/keys straight. Oh, well, I guess I'll keep struggling along the other way. Thanks anyway.

Hi!
Needed time to think

Workaround city for this one. (Hmmm- a bit Mac oriented maybe? Hehhehe- saw the website)
Dont know if this will work, but worth a try...

OK. First, grab something to provide "virtual midi ports," such as MIDI Yoke. The site for MIDI Yoke has the info for use with Win XP- read it carefully, as XP is different than other Win OS's.

Once setup, launch Practica Musica first, and set the MIDI I/O within the program to use the MIDI Yoke ports. Launch PT, and setup a MIDI track to use the same MIDI Yoke ports, reversed (in is out, out is in).

The problem that crops up is synching the two. I have no idea if PM offers synch, and no demo download was offered, only QT movies of the app "in action."

Could hit record in PT, then switch to PM and hit play. It wont record that way with everything aligned, but with tempo and meter set the same, simply nudging/moving the first note to land on "1" of the first bar within PT would align everything. Then use export for that MIDI track, then you have your .mid file.

If synch options are offered in PM, then it would be even easier

Hope it worls, or someone comes up with something better

Oh, wow! Thanks for the detailed reply. I'm going through the install now.
I have to restart my computer, so I wanted to post thanks before I go offline to try this connection (PT doesn't play well with Online here.).

And sorry for my newbiesque impatience, things always seem so urgent when you're faced with a problem.

Thanks, that worked out, I can now sync the programs and have PT record a midi file from PM.

Hey, while we're on this topic, what it the defacto standard for composing people? Is there a composing program (a PT of composition) that I could look into? I'm getting into doing MIDI this way. I can't really play piano, and I get fed up trying to write a melody out on a MIDI grid, but I enjoy it on a staff. Well, this will work for now, thanks for the help.
