Default panned vocals in mono

does anyone know to make panned vocals (hard left, hard right) sound good in mono? ive been listening to professional mixes and when i hear certain mixes in stereo i can hear the lead vocal down the center and doubled vocals panned left n right, and when i hear them in mono they sound just as good, but with my mixes they sound good in stereo but when i listen in mono they get phasy and sound cluttered in the mix does anyone have any tips n tricks to get panned vocals to sound good in mono?

Make sure that left and right channels are unique recordings. At the very least, don't use "stereo widening" plugins to make the mix stereo. All they do is mess with the phase.

PS: If mono compatibility is important to you, use your monitor controller or a plugin to collapse the mix to mono. Personally, I couldn't care less about how it sounds in mono.

Like the last person wrote the left and the right have to be unique. What’s key is not tuning those vocals perfectly. That will make them phase or gout out of phase. When tuning make sure one is slightly sharp and one is slightly flat.

Agree with using unique takes. That gives the best results for me. But if you only have one take it needs to be pitched enough.
