Default Pro Tools MP 9 compatible on Windows 8?

I was using Pro Tools M-Powered 9 (MP9) on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit absolutely fine. Unfortunately I don't have that laptop anymore with me and I'd have to buy a new laptop. I wish I could buy a new Windows 8 laptop instead of Windows 7 but I'm not sure whether or not my Pro Tools MP9 is going to work with Windows 8. Also, I am planning to buy Instrument expansion pack in the future when I'd have saved enough funds.

So considering Pro tools MP9 + Instrument Expansion Pack, is it a good idea to go with Windows 8? Anyone has installed and used this combination to a good extend to certify that they would work just fine? Or should I just stick onto Windows 7 for some more time?

Windows 8 hasn't been officially supported for any version of Pro Tools yet.

I can confirm for you that Pro Tools MP 9 crashes Windows 8 seconds after clicking on it. BSOD with "KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_HANDLED", error message. I can confirm that installing the Pro Tools 9.05 update caused a reboot loop that was only cured by running system restore, which was successful. Upon a successful reboot, clicking Pro Tools 9 icon caused the BSOD crash again. So no, Pro Tools 9 is not compatible with Windows 8 at this time. I highly recommend you not attempt the Windows 8 upgrade if Pro Tools 9 is on your primary production PC. In all likelihood, Pro Tools 10 will work with Windows 8, but I haven't seen an official statement from AVID confirming that and I'm not planning to upgrade to Pro Tools 10 any time soon, even if it is compatible with Windows 8.

I've been running Pro Tools MP 9 on Windows 8 64-bit for a couple of months with zero crashes or issues, so it is seemingly compatible. Those with crashing issues or BSODs may be receiving them for reasons other than an issue with Pro Tools MP 9 and more likely may be a problem with overclocking, incompatible drivers, or some other problem.

None of the compatible devices has official Windows 8 drivers yet, either. All Avid-owned M-Audio devices (Fast Track series and Mobile Pre series) only have official Windows 7 SP1 support. The same is true for the Mbox and HD interfaces, too, FWIW.

Thanks for replying. I ran the windows compatibility assistant and all my software is compatible but pro tools didn't show up on the yes or no list. I've heard from one person they haven't had any problems, and another that's has bad multiple major issues.

Does anyone have this working for them?

The only version of Pro Tools that officially works with Windows 8 is PT 11. There have been some users that have posted success with older versions and Win8, but it is not officially supported.

Thanks. Windows 8 has a compatibility mode for installing/running programs.

I'm going to try this. Apparently best buy lets you return a laptop even ask free you've used it? Going to double check with them but I'm going to try that i think.
