SSL 1964 A+ Series mic pres is where the warmth is at! I think Rupert designed them tho.

All jokes aside, there is no comparison between vintage Neve & SSL mic pre's.
If you have the cash, Neve 1073's will never disappoint you. I use them on just about everything (drums, electric & acoustic guitar, strings, horns,...etc). On vocals, I use an Avalon AD2022 about 70% of the time. The other 30%........yup, you guessed it....my trusty Neve 1073's. Matt Still |

....so...... I take it that Neve is generally considered to be better than SSL...!? (it IS more pricey anyway!)
Specifically, has anyone got an opinion on the SSL "E" series? To add something else; how about Telefunken V672/ V676 (not valve), against SSL...... I think that we can assume that most people would agree that Neve 1073, 1081,..66..84...etc is going to be better, but how about some of the "lesser" stuff (1272..) ? I reckon that a well- racked Telefunken represents amazing value for money given it's quality..... what does everyone think? |

There's nothing "lesser" about the sound of the 1272. Its textured, fat, bigger-than-life quality makes it the richest sounding Neve mic pre made. No SSL pre (including the 9k, the best SSL has done) can hold a candle to it for pop or rock vocals, guitars, drums.
The Averill 1272 is pure Class-A and has DI inputs to thicken up synths, guitars and basses. No EQ, though.

I'm an API man myself. Even Rupert Neve said that those were his favorites at one point.
I'd rather mix on an SSL then a Neve, but I prefer Neve pre's to SSL's. |
