Default how far should you go on the mix berfore mastering

im in the mixing process of a song and im lacking some high end in the overall mix is it ok to strap a eq on the master channel? or should i leave room for frequency tweaking in the mastering stage?...should i go all out on the mix and try to get the mix as close as how i want it to sound before mastering i mean how far should you go with mixing before mastering? just wondering how the pros do it

What a strange question!

Yes, you should "go all out" not only in mixing, but in life in general!

Get things sounding the way you want. Mastering is not some magical thing that will compensate for all a mixes' shortcomings.

And remember, mixes are never finished, they're abandoned.

It is a valid question. You should mix like there's no mastering the same way you should record/produce like there's no mixing.

The only "rule" IMO is no peak limiters on the stereo buss while mixing.

They'll hide the fact that you're clipping the stereo buss thereby negating the whole purpose of its meters.

How true

This begs the question; why does the mix lack high end? Bad monitors? Poor recording techniques? Is the entire mix lacking, or is it a few key tracks(IOW, don't EQ the whole mix when its only certain things that need attention)

In any case, I agree on making the mix sound as good as possible on its own(without compression/limiting) and keep good communication with the ME, in case they hear an issue that should be fixed in the mix and not in mastering. You also could drop some stuff on the master to give you an idea how things will change if they get compression/limiting(and if you arrive at something you really like, do a bounce of that so the ME can hear what you're going for)

yea i felt like the overall mix was lacking some high end.. im using a set of avantone pro mp1 headphones to check my mixes and krk 5 monitors as my main source for mixing.. as of right now im in an untreated room ...i recorded vocals using a tlm 102 condenser microphone running through a rme baby face pro...the thing is when i listen on the avatone headphones the mix sounds dull and on the krks the highs are to bright so im trying to adjust so they sound good on both im kinda struggling on this track

Same answer I posted in your other thread where you ask why you don’t sound like Khalid and get his sound in an untreated room and using KRK 5 which are not something to jump up n down at.

You NEED to do a basic accoustically treatment of the room and learn your monitors 100% if you can’t get something better.

1. Treatment
2. Treatment
3. Treatment

and so on ...
