Sonnet or Magma

There was a thread at the end of the year titled:

"PT 11.2.2 and higher will break Thunderbolt HDX functionality"

It seemed to be resolved with changing cables. Affected both Magma and Sonnet.

Seems the Sonnet is the choice plus it has the SSD drive bays.

Incredible fast (for a SATA drive).

This is the way we went with a Sonnet Echo-Express III-D... Very fast, quiet, & portable. Of course, if you need more than 3 HD's (sys, & 2 via card) you'll need a different solution.

And no probs w/HDX & 11.2.2/TB2 for us...

Other than the fan noise from the add-on mounting kit, no issues with the Sonnet Echo-Express III-R with 2 HDX cards (and a SAS card for the 4 SSD's) running PTHD 11.3.1 on OS 10.9.5 - late 2013 trashcan. Samsung 840 Pro and 850 Pro SSD's.

Just bought one of these to move the SSD's back out of the III-R. Obviously, if I had a machine room or a way to isolate the rack, this wouldn't be necessary. The noise isn't HORRIBLE but since I'm 3 feet away from the thing, it's loud enough to be annoying.

i was advocating this more than a year before HDX came out. fell on deaf ears at avid.

btw i still don't understand the logic offering a thunderbolt product for HD native, but not for their flagship HDX??

We own several of the drive add-on kits for the Echo Express IIIR and out of the tin they are a bit noisier than the chassis. There are three fan noise sources in them -
- power supply fan, always on
- rear panel fan - temp controlled
- internal fan on rear of 3-bay drive chassis - temp controlled

I'm sure you're seeing where I'm going - these are all modifiable. Ours are pretty quiet.

Thanks for the info on the III-R add-on kit fans.

If I were more adventurous I'd tackle replacing the power supply fan and the rear panel fan. I have the fan on the 4x 2.5" drive bay turned off - those were switchable - and since they were all SSD's I wasn't worried about heat.

I actually bought a quieter fan for my Avid I/O - might have to phone a more technologically gifted friend and void some warranties!
