"A game changer"
I just wanted to pop in and suggest that they change the quote from Will Files on that opening banner for PT10 on the Avid site. It SHOULD say, "You're finally going to be able to do things you've been able to do in every other DAW up to this point...and for alot more money!". (rimshot)
It should be said, yes, I am a PT sucker who is guilty of enabling the 'industry standard'. The IDEAL me would take the time to learn a different program. Instead, I just keep taking the lazy way out and paying more and more money to keep using the program I already know in order to avoid a new learning curve. Shame on me! |

Re: "A game changer"
the lazy me who actually learned logic, cubase, nuendo (pretty much the same) sonar, tells you that I prefer pro tools for mixing and editing hands down over all the other and that you can just go take a hike.

Re: "A game changer"
I won't be taking any hikes soon. I'll surely stay right here where I am, trying to feel good about dishing out all the extra money for toolkits to unlock otherwise-basic features on what is admittedly yes, a very good program, even without all the myriad abilities all the other programs have. I just think it would be bizarrely refreshing to see them take a purely honest approach in their promotional materials: "Pro Tools 10. We're catching up!"

Read this post and wonder if over time, as you start using the new features in Pro Tools 10 that opinion will change to : Pro Tools 10, setting a new standard for features that other daw's implement without thinking them through all the way' I realize this is a bold, arrogant even statement but maybe it illustrates the confidence I have asking you this nonetheless : Would you come back after exploring the features in depth, putting them through their paces over a couple of projects, maybe come up with your own tips and techniques etc .... and say you changed your opinion ? Re: "A game changer"
Here's an example of what sullies my opinion: Pro Tools 4 featured a SMPTE timeline as a standard feature. In version 5 it disappeared. Then, we were offered the chance to get that feature back, along with a few other features, for over $1,000, as part of the new DV Toolkit.
As for "setting a new standard for features that other daw's implement without thinking them through all the way", would this include having the only input monitoring that can't be turned off? For me it's more about this gap between versions, though 9 took care of alot of that. We still have the 'Complete Production Toolkit' gap now. And as for "Would you come back after exploring the features in depth, putting them through their paces over a couple of projects, maybe come up with your own tips and techniques etc .... and say you changed your opinion ?" I sure would love to. Trouble is, I have friends who use other programs who, when I glow about the new features, will laugh that we're only just getting said feature. OR they'll ask if said new feature allows a certain function (like aforementioned input monitoring, or visible waveforms when you move regions etc etc). I say no, and they laugh again. Meanwhile, I keep forking over the cash! And I surely will continue to do so, so no worries. You got me hooked! |

Also, what I do when dragging regions around, is to watch the thin, vertical line up in the timeline ruler. It is level with the grabber tool at all times, so I use that as a reference. So, I just click on, say, the loudest part of a region, and can easily drag it to where I want it. IHTH.

For me that's what is missing...midi and music production features and there was nothing new in PT10 in that regard.

Re: "A game changer"
The longest-standing, and most obvious ones, are indeed the aforementioned input monitoring OFF problem, and non-realtime bouncing, which ALSO used to be there, until it got taken away by RTAS, which from what I gather is the ONLY plugin format that can't handle non-realtime bouncing (back to the "thinking them through all the way" thing). And yes, I know that AAX is coming to save the day, and I for one will be most happy, even if it means I'll be forking over another $300 for the upgrade on top of whatever I'm going to shill out for a new interface to replace my then-obsolete 002. But hey, onward and upward! Whatever the cost!
