Default crash course in Mac/PC networks

Hi everyone, I am completely ignorant on how to set up a network of this fashion...........I know the PC side, on the Mac side I can create a shared folder, assign an IP address but that´s about it...........how can I ¨join¨ a network so that I´m able to ¨see¨ the PC´s.......?
Also when I tried to get on the internet (through modem) I had to switch from TCP/IP and disable appletalk.............I´m trying this with Mac system 9.1, the PC´s are XP Pro and 98....

thanks!!

Get Thursby Systems DAVE for your Mac and communicate using NetBIOS or get PCMACLAN and communicate using AppleTalk.

Optionally, use OS X and do the following.
Step 1: Get Sharepoints SHAREPOINTS This allows you to easily create shares on your Mac.
Step 2: Turn on Windows File Sharing on both machines.
Step 3: Connect (Go-> Connect or command-K) on your Mac to connect to your PC using SMB (a windows network protocol). Type in the address SMB://server/share
Step 4: Connect to your Mac from a PC by typing in the name of the Macintosh in the address bar. for my machine I type \\Markintosh. All my share points are visible at that point.

not necceserily,

Install an ftp-server on the PC (Filezilla server is free....) do a seach on www.sourceforge.net (runs under win95, 98, me, xp). Then findan ftp-client for the mac and you're in business for tranferring files from one machine to the other (initiated from the mac...)

Thanks Bastiaan, I will give that a shot too......

Let´s say I install PCMACLAN.....it´s installed on the PC´s, right. Or does it come with a Mac version too?
How do I ¨see¨ the network from the Mac?

thanks

I have a Mac and PC networked. I set up an IP address for the Mac so iots on the same subnet as the PC, e.g. PC 192.168.0.1 and mac 192.168.0.10, both subnet masks are 255.255.255.0 and the gateway is the router address. Set thew mac for filesharing. You will see the computer in the Finder menu in Network ( make sure the Network is visible ion the Finder preferences). When you see the PC in the finder window, select the shared folder on the PC and it will open. Don't dismount that share so that it is always available.

IMy understanding with OS classic is that turning apple talk on isn't healthy for audio production particularly midi, (I could be wrong, the technical side of that I dont know), is this problem the same with OSX 3.upwards?
