Default Wav files lost in session

I bounced down a mix session (wave tracks) and loaded the session again then auto relink comes up and tells me the files are missing. One is the all important kick track.
In the blank space or 'ghost wave' where its supposed to be is the name of the song (bounced track) so it somehow confused the name of "kick" with the title of the bounced track. God know how that happen.
I deleted the wav of the bounced track from my hard drive previously to free up space. Anyway, Ive lost my kick and 3 other tracks.

Looked in the original wave folder (rendered tracks) which I originally loaded them from and the kick and a whole bunch of other tracks have just disappeared.
Why does protools do this? Its totally unfair!! I did not delete the kick track so why the hell should it be gone??
I didn't delete any original wave either and now I cant drag the kick track back. So I have to start from the beginning and drag new waves for the kick and as for the other 'missing' tracks, play them in or position them copy and paste, etc,etc...this is just eff'n ********!!!!!!!!!

By any chance were the files that are missing consolidated at any point?

Were you using rendered elastic audio by any chance? If so I just found this work around,

Step 1) Find the track that is missing the rendered files. Place your cursor in one of the offline regions and hit command + E (cut). Protools will create a new rendered file.
Unfortunately this will only regenerate the missing rendered area up to the next cut. If you have a lot of cuts this can be pretty tedious but still much better than re-editing!

Step 2) Consolidate the track! I personally wouldn't remove x-form from the track until all tracks with rendered processing have been consolidated because it seems that these rendered files come up missing when tracks are changed from active elastic to none… To be honest I haven't tested whether or not this is true and frankly I don't plan to. In the future I plan to use dedicated elastic processing tracks, consolidate when done, then move to a non elastic track.

Protools -- FIX THIS BUG!!! IT'S BEEN YEARS!!!
