The RME Babyface is a USB audio interface which uses the ASIO standard to stream audio into/out of your computer. That interface is not an Avid HD interface but will work with ProTools non HD software.

You can find out more about it here
RME Babyface

Apogee make several audio interfaces, but none of which are HD interfaces.
You can find their products listed here: Apogee product list

You can use a non HD (ASIO) interface with PT HD, so yes that is possible. So, to re-answer your question, yes, you can use either of those interfaces with the HD software. Some of the HD features will not be available without the hardware though.

Since PT9 hit the market, the HD versions of Pro Tools software will work with any interface that the non-HD software works with(minus any DSP for plugins and limited to 32IO, depending on the actual interface).

BTW, the title of this thread is a bit misleading as it implies that the question is about HD interfaces(192, 96IO, HD IO, OMNI....). Those interfaces will NOT work without both HD software, AND an HD-compatible card(HD/Native, HD Accel, HDX).

I've got a similar question so I'm jumping on this thread rather than starting a new one.

Running Pro Tools HD2 Accel with PCIe. With Lynx Aurora AD/DA 24 ch.

Recording session coming up that requires more than 24 channels. Can I connect an RME Fireface via Firewire800 to the mac pro and use simultaneously with the HD hardware for a few extra inputs?

EDIT: Running Pro Tools 10

No, if using HD cards the only interface(s) that Pro Tools will see as valid are the ones connected to the HD cards (or the HDN TB box but not at the same time)
Any USB, FW, or TB interface will be ignored
