But the original poster also said "string bass" which makes me wonder what kind of music it is. For a bowed string bass, I like an RE-20.
Somebody plays bass with a bow...????? LOL

I guess in a nutshell, I would try a few different approaches, use EQ and get rid of the "Sludge" and tame it that way. Get your bassist in an hour early and mess around with it. What pre's selection do you have? Compress it going in if you can. Just try and experiment, that is what I was getting at.

I use a Neumann KLM184, wrap it in foam and stick it facing up behind the bridge next to the body. And a Blue Mouse aiming at where the neck meets the body about 12" out, this gets the slappy sound of the strings, otherwise with out it, you'd just as well record an electric bass and hopefully the players is good or that desired (slappy) sound turns into undesired noise. The neck position is one you have to move around to find the "sweet spot" and also be careful if the playes is a loud breather, because it will pick him up. But with the Mouse I can tilt the head down enough to stop some of this. No EQ....I really don't see how, at least not using subtractive EQ. I always need to remove the mud and maybe some string attack (again, depending on the player) but I never add any EQ. Watch for phase and try to keep the player from moving around too much in reference to the mic on the stand.

Hope this helps!
David

Some great advice above. You should check these guys out. AMT mics They make several mics tailored to specific instruments. I have used their piano mic with excellent results. Their mounting systems are pretty classy and the folks there are happy help.

Thanks everybody! I don't have a bazillion to spend on mics, but lots of good feedback. I had forgotton that I'd played live in a radio studio into an RE 20 and it sounded awesome! Also, I'm going to try the Oktava 012. Those little mics do some great things.

BTW, "string bass" is just another name for upright, bowed or plucked.

Cheers
