troubled Athlon 1.4 user upgrading from ME to XP

Hi,

my system has gone wonky and the computer store guy told me that my mobo (A7M266) is busted and i'm gonna need a new board. i wanna go to windows xp but i ain't sure about my compatibility.

i WAS running my digi001 with:

athlon 1.4
asus a7m266
2x micron 256MB 2100 ddr
2x maxtor 60gb ata-100 7200rpm
matrox g450 32MB


Can I run XP?
Is there an alternative MOBO that I can use? (cheaper? better?)

should i think about a change in CPU?

boards with mixed chipsets are not supported. i have to upgrade myself (from Gigabyte GA7DX). you'll be able to run XP just fine, but PTLE 6.1 will probably give you errors. i'm getting -6045's all over the place. its driving me batty...

I've scoured the thread but it helps only if i had some xtra $$$ to spend on completely adjusting my system for xp, which i don't. xmas is killin' me to boot.


If i switch to the GA7DX like u, do you think it would be wise?
Or should i just see if I can find another A7M266 mobo and just resort to what I've been using all along before my system crapped out?

I'm just trying to salvage what i've already got... when I have the cash, I'd probably just splurge and get me an Allenstein or head on back to the Mac...

I've been off this DUC for so long, i'm blown away how much has changed tech wise since...
