Are you sure they're DVD-Rs not DVD+Rs?
I bought some DVD+Rs accidently when I ordered my DVD Recorder (or the company I bought them from messed up!) and I had the same problem. I had no problem with any DVD-Rs I've bought though. I think the Mac OS doesn't recognise DVD+R/Ws but I am stuck in Mac OS 9 on an ancient Beige G3 so OS X is probably a different story!
