Mono surround monitoring level in a 5.1 room
Film post. old question, it's just been while since I did an LCRS mix in here. Using the dobly surround plugins, I set my surround output to both of my rear speakers. They are set to 82db combined (single channel feeding both) running the same pink that gives 85db per channel on the fronts. This is right, i think. My question is, in PT, when I am setting up my surround monitor output from the decoder, do I send it out at unity, or do I drop it three db to compensate for the two channels that this "mono" surround combines?
Thanks to all expert replies. Please no guesses! |

Re: Mono surround monitoring level in a 5.1 room
It is a very simple thing - each CHANNEL is set for a ref. level of 85dbc/pink. this means that Ls and Rs must each be referenced to 82dbc. 82db+82db=85db. THis means that your surround channel in mono MUST be referenced not to 82 summed, but 85 Ls+Rs (sum). Assuming that your decoder is calibrated properly, you should not have to compensate for anything.
