Default External PRE AMP and D-command

Hello,

I'm looking to buy a pre-amp and my ears fell on the Grace M108 (go digital in the 8x8x8). It's rather vague if it's possible to control the input gain on the D-command, so if someone got some insights it would be very helpful!

Thanks in advance

Yeah, website mentions a Mac/Win app (coming soon) that will control them over ethernet. AFAIK, ICONs used MIDI to control the Digidesign Pre so I wouldn't expect the D Command to be able to control it.

Sounds like a question for Grace, not Avid.

Hello Drew,

Thanks for your answers (also on the other posts)! The M108 is also midi operable; and behaves in the same way as an AVID PRE. Only thing is I have never used an AVID PRE in such manner to control it on the D-command. So basically, if some one uses and AVID PRE and controls it on the D-command, I was wondering how that works. Is the input gain of the MIC PRE amp channel control able on a fader or do you have to flip a turn knob on the top of the channel strip?

Best,
T

Yes,

They confirmed that it works on the same protocol as the Avid PRE, but could not exactly point out how it would operate on the D-command. That being said; Next Monday I will pick up a M108 to test it. I will post my results in the topic here.

Best, T

Ah, I misunderstood. If it's the same as Digi Pre then, press Insert and Pan switch simultaneously.

The M108 works fine on MIDI with any Pro Tools, D Command, D Control or C24 surface. The only drag is the 3db steps of the pre control and that's the AVID system not the Grace. I also have M802 pre's which I've used via MIDI with Pro Tools and the surfaces. One of the encoders becomes the pre control. The flip does not work for this. So you can't use the fader. Or at least I've never been able to figure out how to do this.

I use 16 channels of PRE with my PT system and D-Control. It's a breeze.

My guess is it's similar on the D-Command.

Stef.
