Any G5 users upgrade to PT LE 8.0 yet?
Hi Guys,
I'm still using my late 05 G5 tower (last tower before the Mac Pros) and am running Leopard (10.5.3) with PT LE 7.4.2. I've been reading on few sites that a couple HD users have been experiencing issues going from 7.4.2 to 8.0 on their G5's and wondering if any LE users have made the jump who are also running G5's? Have you noticed a performance knock? Is PT 8.0 sluggish by comparison? Most of my work is tracking, more so than mixing, just hoping it still keeps up with the game as I can't afford the jump to a MacPro just yet and hoping i can still get 64 sample buffer stability. Thanks in advance! Matt |

Re: Any G5 users upgrade to PT LE 8.0 yet?
Yes, I have...and I have not got any work done since then. It worked fine for the first few days, then it just started crashing on opening. I re-installed the OS as well as PT; trashed the prefs and...no luck. It freezes on a different plug-in every time it opens, so removing the offender to the unused folder doesn't work, because it does not crash on the same plug every time. I am extremely frustrated and behind, but I hold no ill will....just part of technology....I just want it to get working. BTW....I have a Dual 2 late 05 G5, 3.5 GB ram. If I hear of any updates and get up and running I will let you know. Cheers.

Re: Any G5 users upgrade to PT LE 8.0 yet?
Dual 1.8 G5 with 4gb ram working fine here. I've been using PT8 for about a month now without too many problems. The problems I have had were minimal, though. As far as 64 sample rate, I've never gotten that low. I tend to stay around 128 or 256 and don't seem to have too many problems. As far as PT8 running "sluggish"... I can definitely tell that mine is a bit slower than with 7.4.2 or 7.4 on 10.4.11 but not an annoying amount. Since you mentioned most of your work is tracking, it sounds like you might be ok. Although it seems like I'm reading a lot of up and down with the G5's, some successes and some problems. Hope this helps and good luck!

Re: Any G5 users upgrade to PT LE 8.0 yet?
Dual 2.5 Ghz Mac G5 with 6 gigs ram and a Digi002 PTLE 8 crashes on me every time.
I have a 4 track file set up with no plugins and it will record or play for a couple of minutes before it crashes. It is very frustrating and I would not recommend the PTLE8 update at this time. |

Re: Any G5 users upgrade to PT LE 8.0 yet?
try taking out some ram and look at your system usage in pro tools. Look at your cpu(rtas) if you take out a gig does it make a difference or does it make a difference if you add a gig?

Re: Any G5 users upgrade to PT LE 8.0 yet?
Dual G5 2.5Ghz w/4.5GB RAM. Working just fine.
I had some disk weirdnesses at first, so I bought Disk Warrier, and it found a bunch of problems and fixed them all up. Strangely, it was a brand new partition with only 10.5.5 on it that had the problems, but all is working smoothly at the moment and has been for about two weeks now. I would definitely say that a clean install of the OS and of PT8 help avoid most (if not all) of the problems. The other factor is the 3rd party plugins. I would suggest starting with only Digi plugins, then add the 3rd party plugins one or two at a time. I still have my 7.4.2 partition to go back to should I have a problem with PT8, but so far, so good. Two partitions (PT8 and 7.4.2) gives you some peace of mind - not everyone has the extra disk space though.

Re: Any G5 users upgrade to PT LE 8.0 yet?
I had success with my G5 dual 2.0 with 4g of ram, I however lost use of some plugs and reverted back to OSX 10.4.11 and PT 7.4, as a bonus all the new plugs in PT 8 work in 7.4!

Re: Any G5 users upgrade to PT LE 8.0 yet?
I have a late '05 2.3 Dual with 2.5GB ram. Just upgraded to Leopard and installed PR 8.0LE with Digi002R. I keep losing communication with my 002R for some reason more often than when I was on Tiger and 7.4
Not sure what to do at this point since it's only been two days since I've been troubleshooting but I'll be watching this thread like a hawk since we all seem to use the same set up ! I was thinking of upgrading to 4GB of ram to help out with the extra workload |

Re: Any G5 users upgrade to PT LE 8.0 yet?
Yeah,
These mixed reports make me a little uneasy... really can't think about upgrade to a MacPro yet and this may ground me on 7.4.2 for a few more months.... GRRR. Anyone have success with PT 8.0 LE on the G5's? (aside from Andy, good to hear it is working out for you!). Matt |

Re: Any G5 users upgrade to PT LE 8.0 yet?
I can't even get the installer to finish on a dual 2.5 powermac G5, it just hangs and kernel panics the machine and thats on a fresh install of 10.5.5.
