Re: Eq and Compression on VI
Only if you don't like they way they sound without EQ or compression. There is no rule that anything must be EQ'd or compressed.

Re: Eq and Compression on VI
Keep in mind that when it comes to actual samples, many of them are already recorded with eq and compression to give more of a finished sound, particularly with drums, like those in Xpand. You may find that they sit well in your mix already, but don't hesitate to add even more if you think it helps.
Also, some sample libraries are specifically marketed as finished samples that you shouldn't have to do anything with, such as Steven Slate Drums. They already sound polished, finished, etc. On the opposite side is BFD 2 which is recorded with no effects whatsoever on the assumption you'll want to tweak them as desired. One other thing is that some compressors or eq's have a certain character they give. I recall someone saying that when they use Synthogy Ivory pianos they put them through the Waves Vintage Series eq, with just a little bit of boost because it makes the piano samples sound more alive, organic, etc. I've also found a situation where I was doing a synth bass line that was all at the exact same midi velocity (and therefore volume). So even though using compression would be useless from a volume/dynamic standpoint, I decided to try a vintage-style compressor on it. I was amazed at how it just simply changed the whole character of it, especially in the context of the mix. So, I encourage you to experiment! |
