HD1 system with which MAC?
I am planning to get a small Protools HD1 system, but don't want to be limited in my ability to grow or expand. How important or useful is a Mac G4 Dual Processor vs. a Single Processor since I will be using a TDM (NOT host based) system? I do not own a Mac yet.
Thanks for your help! |

Re: HD1 system with which MAC?
Don't leave yourself short buy a 1.42 GB machine (The fastest right now). Always buy the fastest Mac you can if you are useing any RTAS/HTDM or Soft Syths. Remember Apple usually does speed bumps in Jan/Feb and Jul/Aug. approx every six months. There have been a few "rumors" about a 2 Ghz G4 at the next Macworld.

Re: HD1 system with which MAC?
and then again, if you don't just go buy one and get started you will be forever waitng on the latest and greatest and never get on with music production. Do enny meeny miiny moe with a dual 867, a dual 1ghz or a single 1.42 and move on. Don't waste too much time on this. For an HD1 system with or without RTAS/HTDM, you will do fine. Put a nice amount of memory in the system and you wont have any issues.

Re: HD1 system with which MAC?
if you plan on using softsynths or software sound modules which are usually rtas then a faster processor will do. dual cpu is a must for mac osx.

Re: HD1 system with which MAC?
Keep in mind that if you need to run OS9, i.e. Pro Tools 5.3.x, you need to get one of the older Power Macs. There are 2 models of the dual-1.25 Power Macs that are for sale new on Apple's store page. Just click on "Mac OS 9 systems".

Re: HD1 system with which MAC?
But they will eventually upgrade to OS X, and then the 2nd processor would come in handy. Plus, single proc. Power Macs that boot OS9 are pretty rare these days.
