Re: Greatest Producer Ever??
I'm gonna throw you guys a real curveball, since all of the guys you've mentioned are from the "contemporary" music world (rock, pop, jazz, etc.). There's a producer, one John Culshaw, who, in the late '50's/early 60's pulled off a never before attempted feat...he produced the first recording of the entire Wagner "Ring". Took him 7 years (!) to pull it off and he had to deal with hundreds of players, multiple locations and, between the artists and label exec.s, more ego than has probably ever been in volved involved in a single production (even more than "We Are The World"!). Anyway, it's a *great* story about a truly great production and if you come across a book titled "Ring Resounding", you can read all about it. You don't have to be a classical music fan, or even a Wagner fan, to enjoy it. If you enjoy great production, you'll love it. BTW, the recording is still landmark.

Re: Greatest Producer Ever??
George Martin, hands down.
Produced the biggest group of all time in an ever changing catalog of music that embraced almost all styles. He produced, he arranged, he played. Impeccable taste and instincts. Many others to be sure, but none had to deal with more of a challenge to consistently top the the last outing and push boundaries of pop and rock. One listen to the chronolgy of development of "Strawberry Fields" alone should say it all. TH |

Re: Greatest Producer Ever??
I don't know if I could really pick a "best" but Tom Dowd was really something else. I can't seem to go more than a few weeks without watching The Language of Music.
