Pro Tools 7.3.1 cs8 today will not open !

Hey to anyone who can help !!!

I actually just posted this over at the Ableton forums too, as LIVE is not responding today also...

Anyhow... basically earlier I went to open PT (version 7.3.1 cs8) and it will not launch at all. It's get half way there, does some of it's initializing etc. then quits

I'm running this on a Powerbook G4 running Tiger 10.4.11.

Below I will post the detailed report, I cannot make these out...
Though it just seems odd that both these programs are failing to launch on the same day

this is getting worse...

I tried installing the fix for version 10.4.11 i.e. version 7.3.1 cs 8... but I think I may have installed the same version on top of itself !!!

Now the PT icon is replaced with the generic 'APP' pencil icon... it does not recognise PT at all... [bleep][bleep][bleep][bleep] !

Try searching for the PACE prebinding script.
It fixes an issue with the 10.4.11 security update that causes this.

OK... I have done this, but as I mentioned before, Ableton has started not
to launch today as well...

Also I have another problem, when I download sometihng... such as the PACE prebinding script, (or an update of ableton, or protools) once it completes downloading, My mac does not recognize it, so when I click on it, it says "it is damaged or incomplete"

I'm not really sure what to try...

Sounds like your OS is having issues or rewire itself. Heres what I would try.

Repair Disk Permissions? Does that show errors?
Create a new Admin User account and try Pro Tools and Ableton from that new account and does that work? Its described in the Troubleshooting sticky.
Reinstall the 10.4.11 Combo Update on top of itself.

Also both those programs use Rewire.
Try pulling Digirewire.dpm out and seeing if it launches?

If so you could try trashing Propellerhead Software Folder
Mac HD/Library/App Support/Propellerhead Software

and clean reinstall Pro Tools 7.3 on the new user account.

It sounds to me like you have re-associated the file types. All Operating Systems use file extensions to identify the file type. In the old Windows world, "exe" was used for executables, On the Mac, "dmg" seems to be common for update files. This is the same for files like "docx" for MS Word, "xlsx" for MS Excel, etc. The Operating System keeps associations of file types with the application that is used to open the file. You can (and it seems like you have) somehow changed, deleted, or reassociated the file type for Protools, Ableton and other programs. If you know what was done it can be reversed by changing it back. Unfortunately you probably don't know how it was done. You are probably going to need to contact your local Mac guru and he can fix it in a jiffy. If you don't know a local Mac guru (everyone needs one) then it may be less frustrating to backup your files and simply reload the OS and everything again from scratch. (Do you use Time Machine? - It might be able to restore your system to a previous working point.)

Hey there...

So... After completely making a mess of my situation... (I tried to re-install 10.4.11 on top of itself ! ... my mac did not reboot after this, thus been away for a few days.. had to take it to the mac people!)

Anyway, my computer is fixed now... Ableton is up and running too, however, PT is now recognized.... but just bounces in the dock once...

I've tried trashing prefs, rewire and propellerhead software and creating a new account... no luck

so.. I'm going for a reinstall... can i do this straight from my latest PT update... i.e. 7.3.1 cs 8 ???

how is the best way to do it... will I need all the reg details/ serial etc??

Or do I need to go from the original disks??

The first thing I would do is reinstall the OS combo update. The Apple reps probably did the normal System Update method which is known to cause the bouncing icon on the dock. You can down load the combo update from the Apple Site.
