Default No sound on playback

Ok, so you will all have to bear with me as I am completely new to the recording world. I've been playing guitar/bass for years, and just now decided it would be a good idea to join the protools world. I received a new mac book as a gift with further motivated me to get started. now, I am running leopard and an mbox mini, and downloaded the update for the software which is 7.4.2. I am guessing. When I record the guitar the sound appears to be getting recorded (it registers sound in protools, and through the headphones), but when I go to play it back, no sound comes out. I know this is a stupid question, but do I have to have monitors to hear the playback, or can I just use the headphones or the computer internal speakers. Obviously it would sound much better if I had a decent set of montiors, and I am working on that, but not there yet. I have tried all of the volume/ mix knobs on the unit and tried different outputs in protools and still nothing. I even uninstalled the program and reintalled it again to make sure that everything went in ok (the first install produced a few error messages). Again, bear with me as I am totally new to this, but I am getting really frustrated with it already. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've experienced a similar problem, not with Mbox Mini, but on my M-Audio Firewire 410. What solves it is opening the interface Preferences (inside System Preferences), and toggling the Sample Rate on the "Hardware" Page, just up and down once, and it does the trick. Maybe something similar happens with the Mbox.

You can use headphones, sure.

Have you made sure that the Mix knob on the Mbox 2 Mini is dialed all the way to the right, for playback?
