word clock and A/D converter?!
I am in the process of buying a new mic pre and A/D converter. I have discovered that I can buy a switcher for Optical for $90. so that I could use the optical out of my synth and the optical out of the A/D converter without having to rewire each time I switch function. I am confused though about the clock. I would like to use the clock from the A/D converter to drive the system but there does not appear to be any way to do that constantly (i.e. a connector to connect the word clock output of the converter to).
So the question is, If the A/D converter is connected constantly and the hardware is configured to use the optical input for the clock, will that clock be available to the system even if the optical input is not being used for any signal? Or will I have to switch to internal clock? I don't quite get the clock thing. Thanks for any help in advance. |

Re: word clock and A/D converter?!
I'm not sure I fully understand the question with regards to the optical "switcher", etc. But per my experience, as long as you have an ADAT optical litepipe hooked up to an AD converter sending clock to the 001, the 001 will read that clock whether or not you are sending audio through that ADAT cable. Of course be sure to select "ADAT clock" in the hardware config of PTLE. If you do select ADAT clock and the clock is not coming in via the optical port for some reason, PTLE will let you know and will then automatically switch to internal clock. Or, just get a really good ADA converter like a Crane Song or something that feeds its clock in via SPDIF.... then run your 001 off that and your ADAT port will be free for whatever you wish to put into it.
I keep a Crane Song HEDD converter unit hooked up to my SPDIF ports at all times, and an RME converter unit hooked up to my ADAT ports at all times. The entire system is run off the Crane Song clock, at all times. I have 18 simultaneous inputs and outputs with this set up... though I only use the 10 good ones... I never use the 001 converters unless it's an emergency or unless I am recording some trigger signals or other non-audio signals. The system works great. (PS - anyone looking for RME or Crane Song converters, let me know - email me... I have a good source, can get excellent deals, etc.) imp [email protected] |
