It seems for Userland (i.e. unsigned kexts) - put them in /Library/Extensions to make it work... I suspect this for all hardware that was working under Yosemite but not in El Capitan.

It also seems that the latest kext that worked with yosemite is required.

REVISED INSTRUCTIONS:
So for any kext... get the latest and install it.

1. Go to System/Library/Extensions
2. copy the required kext
3. paste it to Library/Extensions
4. Open Terminal
5. type "cd Library/Extensions" and hit enter.
6. type "sudo chmod -R 755 copiedkextname.kext" and hit enter again.
7. type "sudo chown -R root:wheel copiedkextname.kext" and hit enter one more time
8. Reboot

Good luck
Sorry it didn't work for my Fast Track C400.

Thanks for digging into this but it does not work with my M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R.#
System Info shows the Extension as loaded (and verified) but the hardware is not recognized.

Bummer.
Well try removing one kext from s/l/e ... Only need one.
Also try an unsigned kext... The unsigned one that is apparently not loaded works for me, while the signed does not.
I.e keep downgrading the driver version until it is no longer a signed developer. I have no idea why, but unsigned, unloaded but correctly permissioned kext works. Perhaps for me it's a case of random leftover system files left in random locations,
I'm sorry it doesn't seem to be working for you guys.

Also I would recommend Pacifist to extract .pkg files to get Kexts out of installer to save time. I'm convinced a random unsigned driver version may work.

Good luck and report back here

I also didn't disable sip.

This also gives me a hope. Really really appreciate. I will try this.
Anyway this AVID (or M-AUDIO) guys are really irresponsible. Can't describe how disappointing this situation is.
I will never consider to buy any product of these unprofessional companies.

Awww what a bummer. it works.. for m-audio fast track usb solidly. I guess Ultra is quite a lot more hit and miss. Perhaps the fact that I have both sets of drivers at the same time is the factor. I have no idea then.

Sorry I may have got your hopes up.... I guess I have enough random system files around from previous OS updates/installs and time machine stuff that I have a random mix of well hidden files that work.

Like I said the strangest thing is that my driver shows as Unloaded and unsigned.. yet works.. And I haven't disabled SIP.

Guess I am one lucky guy.... However it is worth noting that the last batch of updates were days after the release of yosemite.. so maybe Avid and release in a few days again.

Wish I could help further.

I also tried copying the signed one so that it was in both S/L/E & /L/E so both were loaded but I still got no sound
