ExpressCard Firewire, recommendations
Hi,
I run PR9 on an early 2008 MBP 2.4, with FF400. I used to run esata disks, but got a cheap expresscard. I would like to avoid that and have no problems wiht my FW800 GRaid system. Anybody using anything that would care to recommend? I have look through the avid site and rme sites, nothing in particular, but the SIIG card for 003 users. I also noticed, not a lot of Expresscard users. Shame.. I guess that is the reason Steve decided to put it out of the nev MBP (17' being excluded)

Re: ExpressCard Firewire, recommendations
Protools does not support any type of RAID in the system.

Re: ExpressCard Firewire, recommendations
I've been using ExpressCards (PCMCIA on Powerbook G4) for many years. I even have a PCI FW card for my G5. There's nothing like keeping everything happy by putting it on separate busses. I have the same era MBPro with a SIIG ExpressCard... actually two of them... one with 2-FW400 and another with 1-FW800.
That being said, ProTools won't like a software RAID, as is created by Apple's Disk Utility, but I have a hardware RAID that does work. Other World Computing sells quite a few of these where you put in multiple drives and configure it how you want to run. ProTools sees it as one drive.

Agreed, I have an older G4 laptop with the PCI FW card and it works well. Same with the Hardware Raids. I've been using G-Raid drives for years without issues. |

Re: ExpressCard Firewire, recommendations
Hi,
thanks for the response. I wasnt thinking about RAid system of any kond actually. I want to keep my audio interface on MBP's FW and an external disk on a different hub. I use GRAid's Mini 320 GB with 7200RPM. Simple and effective. So any of the SIIG FW expresscards, will do?

Re: ExpressCard Firewire, recommendations
I use a sonnet express card and it works flawlessly with my 08 macbook pro 2.5ghz. I believe digi has a approved express card also. Mine has two 400 ports and one 800 port. I was plagued with errors because of daisy chaining. This solved my problems.

Re: ExpressCard Firewire, recommendations
I have a 2009 MBP with the ExpressCard slot. Live setup as follows ...
I use an ADS Pyro 1394a ExpressCard (genuine TI chipset) to go to my Presonus Firestudio Lightpipe interface (FW400). I use the built-in FW800 port to goto external drives if necessary -Dan
