Re: Why yes, this is the successful Hackintosh build thread!
Okay, so I took it for a spin, now.
Gave it a huge mix session of a 90 minute feature with lots of tracks, plugins and automation. Absolutely no issues. Everything is running so smoothly and stable - if things stay that way, I will never look back. I'm holding on to my MacPro for another few weeks. Just as fallback, in case things eventually do go south (not expecting it, just being cautious). I had a hard time getting the hackintosh to run, because I didn't get a prebuild system with an exact tutorial. I wanted a graphics card with passive cooling, and this was causing some troubles. But I got it sorted out, there's more than enough help on the web. Thanks to all the great and helpful people in the hackintosh community, and thanks Dan (dism) for starting this thread. I wouldn't have tried it, if it wasn't for him and his positive experiences with hackintosh and PT.

Re: Why yes, this is the successful Hackintosh build thread!
I humbly accept your thanks, good sir.
I'm glad I could provide whatever insight/encouragement I did to inspire you to make your own dream machine. As you said, there are so many resources and tools out there that make getting it done a lot easier than one might expect. Plus, it's hard to argue with the bang for buck ratio. My system is still running as flawlessly as it did when I finished the build and started this thread. There is no Mac currently on the market that would sway me to give it up. If someone gave me a 12-core Mac Pro tomorrow for free, I would sell it and buy more front end. I only hope to quell the misconceptions, and help those who, like so many, are frustrated with Apple's lack of commitment to the professional community.

Re: Why yes, this is the successful Hackintosh build thread!
hey guys, i was wondering if someone could help me out with some suggestions.
I installed OSX Lion on my current PC and i have been running PT on it for maybe 6 months or so. I am having troubles though, because i get random freezses and crashes with Pro Tools, so i am wondering if someone could help me narrow it down a little. What am i to look for and what information would you need from me in order to help me out if that were so? Thanks /christer

Also, PT version and OSX version. How did you go about installing OSX? Have you done the usual OSX troubleshooting? Trashed prefs/dbs? Reinstalled Pro Tools? Plugins all up to date? Permissions repair/disk check?

Re: Why yes, this is the successful Hackintosh build thread!
Hey Dism, thanks for helping out!
I got this Gigabyte GA-x58A-UD3R rev 2.0 Intel 980X stock speed 16GB DDR3 corsair Vengeance black 1600MHz (timings manually set!) ASUS HD6870 Corsair Force GT 120GB Some caviar Blacks for PT recording and backup More discs for samples and other stuff Corsair 850W PSU PT HD10.0.1 Native + Omni Native card put in one of the 2 lower PCI slots on my machine Firmware version on Omni 2.10 Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74), havent done any updates because im scared to do something so my system wont start! I really dont remember exactly how i installed, but i used a guide to install lion over snow leopard with an USB thumbdrive, which i found on Tonymac. And then i got some help from a guy there. Everytime i install a program i do a permissions repair, using a small program: Myfix I have done the OSX troubleshooting and done the optimisations with disks and powerschemes and taken away the hotkeys in lion that affect PT. And sometimes i can work for a whole day without anything happening, i have upgraded my plugins recently and i was very cautious before buying any plugins, so i checked them all with the PT compatibility list. Hmm thats all i can come up with now!

Here is a guide to check out. It really helped me get my BIOS set up just right. Mine is OC'd to 3.2 GHz and is solid as a rock. http://lnx2mac.blogspot.com/2010/07/...iguration.html

Re: Why yes, this is the successful Hackintosh build thread!
One of the reasons I chose the Jetway mobo I built the Beast around was the presence of four full-length PCI slots. I wanted some flexibility with my HD3 set (Core, Accel, and Process) so that if the install was dodgy I could move the cards around until things settled. As it turns out, from the very first the system has been brick-stable.
But that fourth slot kept popping into my head... At one point I put an eSATA card in the slot, but I could never get it to work. I ended up just putting in an eSATA extension bulkhead in the normally unusable slot next to the dual graphics card. Works just fine, but still had that empty PCI slot... My particular game plan with Pro Tools is to stay TDM in the truck for the next two years and then make the move some time in 2015. In the meantime, track counts have risen steadily. So I took the plunge. I bought another Accel card. I now have an HD4 system. I put the two Accel cards next to each other and put the Process card at the end of the chain. I see all four cards in the System Resources window, and it's fascinating to watch how they divvy up the load from session to session. I have hung an I/O on each card to make sure they all pass audio. The only thing I haven't done yet is borrow enough I/O to do a 128 track test record. Something to look forward to. The plan is to add an HD MADI I/O and have two 64 input stage boxes. All it takes is m-m-money. Peter

I thought mountain lion had better nvidia support? I had a nvidia GT 9500 that worked in 10.6. I had some other issues that lead me to a amd 6870 I'm using in 10.7. But from what I've read, it will be a pain to make work in 10.8, and nvidia is what seems to be recommended for 10.8 lol.
