Default Can Sibelius in PT8 be used as notation app?

I recently moved to a Mac, and my previous notation program (Noteworthy Composer) doesn't have a Mac version. Does anyone know if Sibelius in PT8 permits users to enter notation? I need to create some jazz lead sheets -- Is PT8 Sibelius up to it? Or does it only transcribe midi into notation?

Thanks,
Mike

Yes. It does a pretty fair job, especially for lead sheet type of notation. It'll show a complete score, also. You can input chord symbols, too, among some nice score and part editing and inputting notes, etc. I think it works very well.

Since I have Sibelius 5.2.5 also, the transfer from PT to Sib is good, too. It's nice to have this in PT8!

You know one feature that Pro Tools doesn't have that Sibelius does and I wish that Pro Tools did have is Keypad. For manual note insertion particularily in the MEW Keypad would be the bomb.

Anyone made the switch from Finale? I'm considering it cause it'd make life easier. Is Sibelius so different?

I use both Finale 2009 and Sibelius 5.2.5. I teach a basic theory class, where finale is used on our workstations. It's very nice, and not too difficult to use for the basics of notation input and editing for students new to notation. I have not really studied Sibelius to any serious degree, so I don't know it like I do Finale.

However, I find that Finale 2009 is quite a bit easier to deal with when using Virtual Instruments. But, the transfer of notation files from PT 8 to Sibelius is nice.

I switched from Finale to Sibelius for many reasons.
Avid buys Sibelius and integrates it with PT8.
The Sibelius Yahoo Group is big, active, and very knowledgeable not just in how to use the program, but in music notation and music theory.
I don't know about Finale 2009, but my experience is that Sibelius works better.
I was tired of paying Coda (the Finale people) $120 every year (for ten years) for an upgrade that took revisions to get right.
Also with Avid owning Sibelius it will hold them to a high level of competence.

I agree about having to get charged about $100 for an upgrade every year. Since PT8 has a notation feature now, I'm going to make a greater effort to learn it now. Sibelius has very nice learning sheets to print out for students, and that's what I use to make tests and lots of examples of things for school.

Several years ago, I tried using Sibelius for composing, but I quit because I already new how to use Finale for most things.

I'll give it another try, since PT has this nice feature now!

Regards,

Dennis
