Default What are the best overhead mics???

I need to purchase a set of mics to record some live R&B music. So far Im thinking about an AKG D112 on the Kick and a Shure Sm-57 on the Snare. I believe all I need now is a good pair of overhead mics right???

What do you guys recommend???

Hooooooo Boy...this is gonna start a thread...

You can go from the ridiculous to the sublime...

A Radio Shack Piezo (stereo) can give excellent results when used properly...

The SM-57's mentioned in the previous post work well...

A lot of folks get excellent results using small diaphragm condenser mikes ( I prefer a pair of Neuman's KM-84/184's separated above the kit).

...And then, several studios up in the Big H area use large diaphragm condensers (like AKG C-12's) in the same or similar manners.

I know, choices, choices...try something and see if your ears like it. As usual, your mileage may vary...

Determine what your budget is for mics.
Try everything in that range you can. Find a pro audio dealer that has a no questions asked returns policy.
The ones you like most are "the best".

The end.

Hope this is helpful.

Depending on the sound you're going for, individual tom microphones may be called for as well. SM57's are a relatively inexpensive way to get good tom sounds. MD421's are nice too, and one of the industry "standards"...a variety of condensers sound good as well.

As for overheads, there are a lot of ways to go there as well...I like the various Royer ribbon microphones a lot, as well as the Earthworks omni condensers. Especially if you're not miking up the individual tom's I'd recommend you give the Earthworks stuff a listen.

Try the Audio-Technica AT4040. It's perfect for overheads.

I'm a drummer at Berklee, on a recent session we A/B'd a pair of Neumann M149 tubes against a pair of KM-184's through an SSL. The 184's were without a doubt the winners. At about $6,000 cheaper I'd recommend those. I also did a session last weekend and used a pair of KM-84's through a pair of Neve pre's. I couldn't be happier with the overhead sounds.

Pencil condensers are a popular choice for this sort of thing. Cheaper alternatives to KM-184s are Oktava MC012 or the Rode NT5 matched pair. I've also heard excellent results out of the Shure SM94 in a live setting.

Big Tyme, i've used the same set up on kick and snare that your using. For overheads, I've used a pair of AKG 414's or Shure SM-81's. IMHO, I got my best drum sound ever with SM 57s on the kick and snare and SM 81s for the overheads.

Oops, just noticed the bit about you recording R&B music. In that case, i wouldn't worry about overheads, and would invest in some tom mics. Microtec Gefel makes some good ones, though I forgot what the model number was. AKG 414's would work as well. The last R&B project I worked on, we didn't even have overheads, but we had close mics on ever drum.
