Seriously? Ideas first. Always was, always is, always will be (hopefully).
Same in music, same in art at all. Being said technologies bring new ideas and new possibilities to release their potential. But never instead. However we see often many wrong examples unfortunately.

Only huge Hollywood movies will use this technology and since I don't work in multi-million productions I may only care about it because of the value of the advancement of technology. More important to me, is how this technology will trickle down (if any) to the non-Hollywood filmmaker who is delivering content to a consumer that is less and less engaged in huge corporate theatrical chains. The real market, for people like me that work in -non-Hollywood- stuff, is in the production of sound for the convergence of internet, tv, e-games, and mobile devises. Many of these new technologies fail and never become implemented but even if they don't flat out fail, their implementation may be very scarce, and its production can only support a small work force. Think I-max (1 theater in my city to cater to 4 million, and zero theaters in any of the surrounding cities that make up a region of 11 million). 7.1 non-existent, surround 5.1 may be for home theater but most people have a $300 dollar theater in a box from a big box store and it is usually improperly set up, Blu-Ray not a great success either. I just want a Pro-Tools 11 that doesn't crash and works with video properly, before I attempt to mix in 3D.

I think it is quite a wrong idea to associate immersive sound with multi-million projects. I can imagine that, when you say "huge Hollywood movies", you think of action and/or animated films, where immersive sound would be used to increase the action and movement, but my experience tells me its really an oversimplification.
The biggest advantage (as far as I see it) of immersive sound systems is the increased definition - everything sounds so clear, especially when you compare it with a traditional 5.1, where surround sounds are being routed to an array of speakers. As a consequence of such an increased definition, all sounds can benefit from this technique - dialogues, BGs, music, so you can happily use it for any kind of project - not just "2-fast-2-furious" type of movies.
You're right about difficulties in bringing this technology to homes - I think it was never been intended for home use. As you say, in most homes even stereo is poorly reproduced.

I think that it's actually more interesting in films that don't have things blowing up ever 10 seconds. You can really hear the subtleties much better.
When you have 120 db screaming out if all ten speakers, it doesn't really matter where it's coming form. It's just all loud, everywhere.

Galaxy studios appears to have set up a workflow that makes sense. Panning decisions are are integral with the editorial process in rooms that translate to the larger space where the movie will final.
