Default Movie Menu > Set Movie Sync Offset???

Why is it that "Set Movie Sync Offset" delays the audio of the Pro Tools session, rather than advancing the video? We first figured this issue out when exporting bounced tracks back to Avid Nitris for online (had to bump the files back four frames to get them to line up, exactly the same delay that our new Plasma/Canopus PTHD system uses). It's rather aggravating to realize that the entire hour-long layoff to DA88 you just did is four frames out of sync because you forgot to set the "Movie Sync Offset" back to zero....
Aargh. Are there any plans to rectify this in the hopefully-near future?
I haven't had to deal with this in the past because most of the systems I've put together have used Fuse or Igniter for video...
Thanks

Hi,

What version of Pro Tools are you using? Mac or PC?

Are you publishing as OMF or converting sample rate when you bounce?

Are you using MachineControl to layback to the DA88?

Jordan, is that really what the movie offset does -- delay audio? So when I layback to a tape transport, my mix is being delayed by the number of quarter frames I have dialed into movie offset?? Now that's something to really watch out for!

I have NEVER had this problem. I do laybacks everyday. There must be some other reason that there is a delay. Then again, when I do a layback, I chase a digbeta or whatever I am laying back and record to the deck. But, if there was a delay caused by the offset, it would be late going to the medium, which it is not.

Jordan-
The system is a HD2 Accel, PT 6.4, running on a G4 1.42DP with 1.5 GB Ram, Mac OS 10.3.2. We're not publishing as OMF, and this offset has occurred both laying back to DA88 (using MachineControl) , and we first noticed it bouncing stereo tracks out to AIFF, convert after bounce, starting at 1:00:00;00. When the bounced tracks were imported into the Nitris and spotted to 1:00:00;00, they were four frames late. When I removed the offset and bounced tracks, the audio spotted perfectly.
Thanks-

This sounds very strange indeed. I wonder if it's a bug in 6.4 with ADC turned on. In the past I haven't had this problem, but haven't had a chance to test it yet in 6.4. Can anyone else confirm this?

I would offer that even with ADC on, the point is to maintain timecode/address accuracy at all times, which would mean advancing the audio and the video for any offset or ADC to take place. How could you lock PT up otherwise?

I've tried a few tests (bounce and layback) with Movie Sync Offset jacked up to 100 quarter frames and can't reproduce this. It works with both ADC on or off.

Kevin - I'm not exactly sure what's happening on your system. Please contact tech support via phone to troubleshoot.
