Default 002 rack firmware update killed my rack and OS X

Hello, I was running OS X 10.2.8 on a Powerbook G4 15inch (1 GHZ 1GB RAM).

Everything was fine. Life was worth living.

I purchased a DIGI002 Rack (cause I didnt want any problems, I figured hey! these guys have it DOWN)
and followed instructions to the letter:

I made sure my OS X was at the right version (10.2.8)
I made sure I had quicktime 6.2
I made sure my password had no spaces.
I made sure I fixed permissions on my HD.

I installed PTLE 6.1 that came with the rack.

At one point, it connected to the rack and asked me if I wanted to update the rack's firmware which needed updating, I checked in the "Getting started" book and on page 12, sure enough, it told me to YES go ahead so I did. Everything seemed fine, firmware got all installed and I restarted as asked.

That's when the troubles started...

Problem 1: after reboot, No more System preferences in OS X... it just starts and dies right away... was fine before all this.

Problem 2: the 1394 light on the rack blinks and the rack makes a ticking sound...

Problem 3: ProTools LE can't find any digidesign hardware...

OK.

So I tried:

The book (on page 12) said to wait 30 seconds then if still no hardware, reconnect and click OK.
That didnt work. Book gave me no options if that failed so I was left to try things...

Tried updating to PTLE 6.1.2. still no hardware.

Tried Updating core audio to 6.1.2. still no hardware.

Tried Command-options-O-F and "reset-all". still no hardware.

Tried the whole thing on a PC with windows XP (felt ashamed, but had to try). No hardware detected.

Tried calling digidesign but spent 30 mins on a cross-country long distance call, listening to muzak (very well recorded but still very sad to listen to).

Tried to ERASE my whole system and re-install OSX from scratch.

From 10.2.1 , I installed the combo upgrade wich is a whopping 97MB download to 10.2.8,
then quicktime 6.2. It's now 4 am. My girlfriend thinks about moving out...

Still no hardware...

Gave up and came here...

GUYS. I need this to work.

I think now that the firmware update somehow killed the 1394 in the rack...

What do I do now.

Please, I don't want to have to get religion...

Thanks for any help.

I guarantee it's your harness. Call DIGI, they will send you a new harness.

EVEN BETTER!! READ this:

Mario Gautier from Media Musique in Montreal, (the man who sold me the rack)
hand delivered the harness cable himself and helped me set it all up.

Everything is just fine now. Perfect even!

As I've read in other posts, it's crucial to have a solid gear dealer for support when things go wrong, and nothing beats this level of personalized service.

Thanks Mario and Media Musique in Montreal.

I will send you more audio fans.
You guys are the best in town.

Mario really went out of his way to make my gear work (on his day off) and drove almost 75 miles on top of that to where today's gig was at.

All in all it made me confident I made the right choice in Buying ProTools.

Now I can get our europe tour set up right.

Let's get busy and make MUSIC!!

Cheers!!

Ray a happy bandgear dude.

I am having this same problem... 'cannot locate the hardware' Where is the harness located? I bought a new firewire cable thinking it may be that. Is the harness inside the rack?

Yes, it's inside and you have to get a new one from Digi. Call them!
